OBX and VB area.

Anyone here on sways from these areas? I will be out that way in 2 weeks for some meetings and would like to check out a few shops and catch a few sessions if there are waves.

Hey ResinDrums, thanks agin for the 249ECO report.  I grew up surfing the Outer Banks.  Springtime is hit or mis (mostly miss) and cold water.  Generally the Outer Banks will be bigger than Va Bch.  Hatteras will be bigger than northern banks (Kitty Hawk/Nags Head), plus warmer water.  As far as shops go, if you can catch Bill Frierson in his shop, it will be worth your time.  Premier shaper.  I have been riding his boards since about 1970.  If you like local surfing history, try Freedom Surf when Pete Smith is working.

Hi ResinDrums,

S-turns near Rodanthe is usually one of the better spots on the OBX.  As Hoggatg mentioned, you can go south to Hatteras, but thats a bit of a drive from the VB area.

I agree that Freedom and Bill Frierson's would be good shops to visit.  A couple of other shops you may want to check out are Austin's shop (its a fairly small shop, but his boards are incredible!) and if you want to fondle alot of boards, the WRV shop may be worth a visit.  Whalebone, which is just down the street from Freedom is a pretty nice shop as well.  Almost forgot to mention Tim Nolte's shop near Nags Head.  Tim is another excellent local shaper.

Hope that helps.
