ok now i have a question..

has any body noticed a problem with keeping mekp or wax soultion…in a plastic bottle?..i have usually had it in a glass jar, mostly wax soultion…i know it has some styrene in it …is it slowly eating at the plastic…

Have,

Yes, there’s a chance that the ‘styrene’ it is eating the bottle. Even Polypropylene (PP or PPCO ), which is a very chemical resilient, is not recommended for the storage of styrene. Glass is probably the best bet for it.

Your MEKP on the other hand can be safely be stored in, inexpensive polypropylene plastic bottles.

Yeah, don’t keep mekp in plastic drink bottles. We went for supplies once, needed styrene and didn’t have a container, so we put it in a one litre plastic soft drink bottle. Seemed okay for the while.

A few hours later, back in the workshop, I thought I’d better decant back into our glass jar. The plastic bottle had softened, but hey, no problem, just carefully take the lid off and pour.

As the lid came off, the plastic bottle shrunk, and I was covered in spraying styrene. Tossed the clothes, straight into the shower and soaped up.

A good lesson learned, but the most lucky thing was that I didn’t get any in my eyes. Not nice, but could have been a lot worse.

Everyone…be careful.

A good source for the plastic bottles (for MEKP storage) is an outdoor/camping supply store. Ask for bottles made by Nalgene and look on the bottom of the bottle for the abbreviation PP (polypropylene).

Styrene is a real pain to store even in glass bottles since most are capped with some type of plastic and/or rubber seal that deteriorates - thus letting the styrene evaporate. Teflon is one of the few plastic type materials that’s impervious to styrene. Though a bottle made from teflon is extremely expensive. Although a teflon cap, a cap with a teflon seal, or wrapping bottle’s threads with teflon plumbers tape might work.

Howzit have, Catalyst is sold in plastic containers so no problem there, but SA comes in metal containers so that's how to store it. Styrene is a resin thinner and since resin is plastic, the styrene is affecting the plastic container. I keep my usable SA in a quart can with a hole punched in lid so I can just squeeze the can and when it's empty I just refill from a gal container. Aloha,Kokua

ok …yeah thats what i figured…glass or metal for wax/styrene…plastic is ok for mekp…thanks there

i did have a gal. of mekp stored in its original bottle leak out all over my shed floor,it sat on the shelf for @ 10 years though

Hi-

keep my styrine in a a glass jar with a metal lid, used to use a large medicine jar (like chemist used in their displays about 20 yrs age) this had a glass stopper, but being a cluts I broke that. going to check out some suppliers of scientific equipment, I bet they would have something really handy, after all they have to store the really nasty stuff right. If I find anything I’ll update this post with a pic and detaits.

yeah…hey listen to this …i get mekp for about $1.50 a pound thats something like $15 a gallon…about the same for wax additive…cool huh? i think so…i just gotta find something good to keep it in for a while…i guess at that price i can toss it if it goes bad or whatever…

Waste not - want not dude, but yer at that price I see your point, stuff costs more in the U.K coz most of its on import,

He He.I can remember this kid that wanted to buy some catylist from me and I told him fine, just bring me glass jar with a lid.Well he waltzed in with an old "Mr. Peanut"jar in cherry condition so I went ahead and gave him about 1/3 of a gallon in the original container. He was stoked as hell.I sold that jar for $125.00 to a collector.Any of you dumb surfers out there got any red coke bottles??? LOL RB

actually i found out a gallon of mekp weighs 8lbs…so 12 bucks a gallon…and no im not a dumbass ,i wouldnt keep it in a coke bottle…if i had a gallon i suppose i will keep it in what it is distributed in…but since i probally will not need a gallon i will surely find the best thing for it…

Howzit “have”.I think you may have missed my joke.Red coke bottles are worth a fortune if you can find one.Anyway…a glass container with a lid is probably the safest way to store catylist.Keep it in a cool dry place and out of the sunlight. RB

oh yeah now i got it…come to think about it never seen a red coke bottle…i was just picturin the label of coke being red…ha ha
