The word aloha derives from the Hawaiian words alo meaning “presence,” “front,” “face,” or “share”; and ha, meaning “breath of life” or “essence of life.”[citation needed] In ancient times—and to this day—Hawaiian put their foreheads together and say “alo,” and then breathe out saying “ha,” thus literally facing and exchanging their life’s breath.
[/url]Spirit
Over the decades the word aloha has been used in reference to a complex state of mind called the Aloha Spirit or sense of aloha. The Aloha Spirit is often described as a sense of care and hospitality to those around as well as respect for their personhood, even in the face of stressful environments, occasions or people.
Aloha, everybody.
Thanks for that information Janklow, so ‘Aloha’ is an action as well as a vibe ?
Over here the Maori ‘Hongi’ ( rubbing of noses ) is kind of similar, although I am not an expert ( The last time a Maori requested that I rub noses with me it was a prelude to attempting to swipe my wallet ! )
With regards to my previous post, now removed based on good advice, I do wish to re-iterate that Roy does have a thing about the autocthonous population of Aotearoa and that he continues to bad mouth them/us on this forum, now accusing his autocthonous neighbours of stealing from him. Call the police Roy it is only hearsay and there is no market for that. I don’t have the will to hound the guy, but some statements he makes are offensive and not called for here.
Well as a matter of fact I spoke the truth. . . the last time a Maori asked me to Hongi with him it was a prelude to a now well known but elaborate scam . . . . it starts with the claim that the man has won money at the races and wishes to share it with the victim. . . . he shows a wad of cash and thenn proceeds through various moves which result in the tossing of a coin after the victim has added money to the wad. . . it is very slick move if done correctly
In my opinion in the case in question the person misused the Hongi.
Get off your high horse mate, and get a sense of humour. . . . I have lived around Maori all my life, I take people as I find them, have Maori friends, and was merely relating a true incident.
As for being the bottom strata. . . you have to be joking. . . I have a large and happy family, a University education, my own business, and own three properties. . . I don’t have to answer to anyone, and can surf whenever I feel like it. . . I’m Rich !
Regarding official complaints. . . . I am the one who should have made an official complaint. . . perhaps you are one of those who feels that Tangata Whenua status gives the right to steal money ?
Saying that I transcend all bounds of human decency is bloody ridiculous, you don’t know what you are talking about, in fact recently I made an involuntary donation of a $1200 solar panel which my Maori P addict neighbours decided to take to fund their habit, not to mention 3 bicycles. . . generous of me don’t you think ?
On the other hand my favourite sparring partner and good friend James Ogle is Maori, like I said i take people as I find them.
You claim that I am racist, but in fact the opposite is true. . … when riding my olo board I sometimes feel the spiritual presence of ancient Hawaiian big board riders, it is only possible to do this if one transcends racial differences.
I have revered the Duke and Tom Blake for many years, my interest in Olo boards and the old way of surfing requires an open minded relationship with their spirit . . . . . in my opinion I have more sincere respect for the Duke than many who claim to respect him but appear to treat him as a glass case exhibit which is owned by those of their own ‘race’ . . . . . .
The Duke lives, and I feel that he has a sense of humour !

All of the forums are on to this thread Roy. The world is now at your feet.
If you are listening to the movie which I made using the footage, it has a different soundratck from John’s version, which uses Hawaiian slack key guitar. We used some new age techno, three different tracks melded together.
Thanks for the link, the second track on the movie is from “Manvantara” by Bliss from the album Buddha bar, can’t track down the drumming bit right now.
Here’s one I really like, The Empty Mind by Yellow Bell:
I guess if you like New Age Techno mixed with semi-ancient (70 years ago?) surfing by the Duke, OK. Of course, you guys can listen to whatever you wish.
Somehow I found the techno track somewhat incongruous.
Easternpacific… FWIW, I’ve asked (via PM) Kendall to check with his contacts at the museum regarding any issues they may have with any of this. So far I have not heard anything definitive. Did you get your copy?
A matter of taste John, we removed the slack key guitar (which we like) because it was out of sync with the hula girls and ukelele players, and hey, we are just rattling peoples cages and mixing it up to bring the old stuff to the attention of people who have had it neatly compartmentalised in their minds(IMO) for too long. . . . dust it off, photoshop it, give it some air and a fin , that sort of thing !
History has to be alive to be alive !
As for ‘issues’ ROFL perhaps the Patriot act could be invoked ?
Either way it’s me publishing the footage not you so I doubt if you have anything to worry about, I can remove your name from my site if you like.
"Nice copyright grab from the Surfing Heritage Museum
Karma "
I have not seen their footage. Sounds like SHM just has a copy of the Castle Film reel. Here is a snip of PM from Kendall who was kind enough to look into it. I have not received a reply to my inquiry directly to SHM.
Hi John,
Barry from SHF says he has no idea about the copyrights of Castle Films.
HAWAII SOUVENIR FILMS - These films were sold at camera and souvenir shops the late 1950’s. All mint beautiful, rich Kodachromecolor. Each is 50’ (3 inch reel) in the OB: HULA SHOW, KILAUEA IKI’S DRAMATIC RETURN, PHASE I (Volcano activity in 1959)(2), PHASE II, KILAUEA IKI’S DRAMATIC RETURN, TAHITIAN DANCE - $20 each
I could give a shit about such things for personal use, but in the hands of Roy, on his self gratifying world of Roy website with the pages stuck together, where he puts himself in the class with the Duke, it sucks.
But hey, you got a mentioned on the Roy site. Whoopee!
There are some people we use as indicators of the worth or success of an idea or project, only in reverse . . . so that if one of those people doesn’t like something, it is a general indication that it’s good… . . a contra indicator one might say.
You, Mr ‘easterpacific’, are one of those we use as a reliable contra indicator.
Thankyou for the valuable feedback, which tells us we are on the right track !
Nah. It’s a highly dubious purely egoistic proposal of anti-meritocracy you make there, and he’s not the one who’s got it backward. Face it–it may just be the case that it’s NOT everyone else that’s anti-social backward nuts…
You stuffed it…Duke Kahanamoku would maybe give you a pass, but you stuffed it.
And, after all, your career on the internet does look like a lot of …
