I picked up an old log that I am resurrecting from the dead (hope to finish today), and was wondering if anybody might have some background info on it.
It’s a bizarre, 9’6" x 22", 33lb, beast that has very deep channels between the 3 strings on BOTH the top and bottom. The label says “HOUIESY” - California & Juno Beach, FLA. (Or possibly HOLLIESY)
I believe that what you have is a Holmesy, 1966 Stock Model, 1967 The Sidewinder, 1968 The Kim Neilson model. Check Google they will have all the Info you need
Hi Elvis.Always wanted to say that. That’s a Holmesy. He made boards here in Florida(Juno beach)
back in the day.Had a board called a “sidewinder” that was an odd noserider shape. The concaves look like the foam shrunk between the stringers.Alot of old timers get that, although he made some odd boards and it could have been a design feature.Should be a fun board to ride when your done.Good luck with your project
so now i know where elvis when when he ‘died’. looks like he became a surfer chasing the the endless summer and is now raiding dumpsters for hunks of uv abused foam and fiberglass. good to hear you are alive and kicking!
i’d like to know how that board surfs. please post a follow up when you get a chance to get it out in the water. i wonder if you are gonna be able to notice those channels on the bottom (and to what degree they might compensate for a soft rail). at 33 pounds, lemme know when and where you are gonna take that thing so i can be sure to be out of the water!
Thanks for the beta all, a key fracture over the logo kept me from deciphering the “M”. Led me to some googled background.
Regarding the channels, it’s hard to believe foam shrinkage can be that exaggerated (averages 3/8" - 1/2" deep). The fact that it is on both top and bottom lends to the theory, though that picture of the “sidewinder” exhibits Holmesy’s willing to experiment.
Brandon, got any details on how that “sidewider” handled? Was the design idea to draw the tail down for nose riding (but at the cost of drag)?
thanks again all.
PS. Chandler is that nat Rick Kane still doggin ya?

that was the idea…just a different way to channel water up over the deck. not sure how it worked out, though. it’s from my friend’s collection, and i don’t think it’s comin’ off the racks any time soon…but if i can cajole him into bringin’ it down i’d love to run it through the gauntlet.
Aloha, Man that brings back memories . My first board was a 9’ 6" Holmsey Noserider. USED I was 14 … A long time ago . Had to drag it down the beach. Actually rubbed a ding into the rail with the sand .Had that same “speed skeg” and slipcheck on the nose and tail . Those were the days. Wish I still had it but of course what did I do ? Had it "cut down " it was the thing to do with the big boards at the time . Holmsey was making some boards again a few years ago I saw a couple in a shop for a while . Think they may still be there 1 was the sidewinder . Holmsey was the hottest shaper around here back then . He made the Kim Neilson V-Bottom which became very hot too.
