older guy's shortboard

I too like the Mollusk.  Nice shorty for bigger surfers or those just wanting more paddle.

NukeFish’n… Nice…very similar board to what I just shaped for somebody, including the bottom…except it’s a squash. I’ll try to post some pics but it’s just been laminated. Using UV poly, and it’s been raining for a week!

My ol’ fave boards have been shrinking lately, and I’m struggling with what to do myself next… When I made this one for a customer, I saw my future…and its not so bad!   7’ x 21 is a good round number -

That is one fine looking board.

This is 7-2 x 21 1\4. I’ve never had a customer not say it wasn’t the best big guy shortboard he’s ever had. This is what I personally ride so I’ve been able to beat this design to death.   tw

love this board!  could we get some more shots, from other angles (rocker, bottom, fins, etc.)?  thanks

Hey Huck, I downloaded the 6-8 flyer template off greenlight. Keep it thick, thruster set up. I had friends riding it all summer and they all agreed it was just easy to have fun on. Maybe you should build a Mini Sim, that is where the fun is. Steve

6’7" x 20" x 2 9/16"

7’8" x 21 1/4" x 2 3/4"

6’3" x 20 3/4" x 2 3/4"

tons of volume in these, but still quite responsive and lively, super fast, stable and paddle like a demon on roids on heat chasing beaver after being in prison for ten years…you get the idea…haha…   dunno bout this ‘old guy’ thing, I reckon us older guys can ride what ever we  ( does 37 class me as old, coz sure sounds it but dont friggin feel old…) want still, just have to be a bit clever about it, make the design and foam work in our favour…doesnt always mean longer…

Huck,   These boards are 12- 21 1\4- 14 by 2 5\8 thick. The fins are 12’ up from the tail. The bottom is flat to double concave to single off the tail. The rocker is 5 in the nose and 2 3\4 out the tail with a pronounced curve behind the front fins. Single concave cuts through the curve and goes to flat at the rear fin. This board is great as a quad with rocker and concave adjustments. I can send you a photo that you can enlarge and scale for a template,   aloha, TW

just photos of the bottom / fins mainly, also a side shot showing rocker, if you've got one.  I'll pm you my email.  thanks!

geez how old are we talking about here?

I’m old (47) and a shortboarder

5’7 x 18-1/2 x 2-1/4

I guess everyone assumes that if you’re old you’re fat.

I’m 49 1/2 (can’t wait to start in on Huck’s over 50 surfers blog next year) and still weigh what I did in college- 155lbs.  I do use more foam than your “standard” shortboard, so I can compete with the groms (I am a weekend warrior).

Nice board as always Bud.  What are your stats (height and weight).  I’m guessing you need less foam given where you surf (North Shore, right?).

…seems that the header is not exactly might be more like older and bigger guy board or older than 65 or something  or not trainned adults surfboard or lazy surfer board

-hey Bud, may be you remember a board that I posted in the quiver about 3 years ago or so very similar to this one.

can you share a bit of ride feedback?

-type of waves, paddling, bottom turns in several conditions, where s your back foot positioned or is changing depends on the turn and on the wave…(that is normal)

re entrys and recoverys

thanks

I am finding that with age it is more the width of the plaform than just the length that matters.  I can ride a 6-0  by 21 fish but a 6-6 by 19 SB is squirley.

I see so many guys out on the absolute wrong boards. Usually older guys that are riding something too small or too thin. I surf mainly points so this is even more apparent. There isn’t a “magic” age that warrants going up a little in length or volume. It’s more defined by self honesty. What are you really going to enjoy riding? Are you riding a small board to say you ride a small board? Do you ride a small board to prove to yourself that you aren’t aging? I don’t think there is anything less attractive in surfing than someone trying to ride too small a board. At some point frustration takes over and a few inches are added. There are exceptions as I know older guys that rip on a small board but VERY few. There is a big difference in THINKING you’re ripping and actually ripping.   tw

Thanks man… I’m 47yo x 5’8 x 143lbs, live central Oahu, surf where the waves are

Hey Reverb, always in awe of your work, thanks for all your contributions for us amateurs here … don’t recall the particualr board you speak of. My foray into the HP twinnies has been nothing that has not been done before I know, but is new to me. Little over two years I been riding these in almost everything up to DOH, depending on the spot. For me, it’ all about going vertical and on a rail. many of the pics you can see my foot placement, boards are short, pulled in tails, huge fins placed way back…  very little movement of my feet

Rider feedback… well, I’m quite the camrea whore, me and my friends usually carry water proof cams when we’re surfing. Here’s some/a bunch all on my backyard 5’7 or shorter twin fins.

Camera phone vid, first two waves, getting used to a new twin I made this past Jan '10. High tide bumpy lumpy secret spot. as you might notice the board recovers extremely well from too early off the tops and 'squirts' out of cutbacks

Love good twinnie surfing.  Great shots.

Great photos, Bud. One rippa !
