Olive wood?

One for the wood ogre’s - I’m in Greece for a couple days and happened upon a place that sells chunks of olive wood. I’ve seen it finished as spoons, bowls, and othe related stuffs. It’s got a great looking swirly caramel grain and would love to make a tail block out of it but am wondering if it’s to oily. Any of you have any experience with it?

SurfDad , Through out your clothes and fill up your bags with Olive wood!!! I love it ! It is by far my most favorite wood for wood turning . I would use it for other things but it is hard to come by here. There is no such thing as to oily !!! Seal oily woods and use-em !! Bring all of it back that you can you will not regret it. Hopefully the wood is milled into boards or blocks. If it has any bark on it you won’t get it through U:S customs. Some times you can get heat from them if it is in the round ,like limbs or trunks. Have not had trouble with milled lumber~~Ahui-Hou- Wood_Ogre

Traveling with Olivewood, nice! We’ve got a lot of it in our area, using it for the best BBQ’s. It’s been tough on the oil producers though with the Olive Fly infestation into California.

Thanks for the info guys. I was in Crete brifly to pick up cargo and didn’t make it to the lumbar yard. I’ll try next time though. I did find a piece for sale in Chania that was approx. 12"x7" for 25 Euro. It was finished and just seemed to expensive. Sure is pretty stuff.

olive wood is friggin expensive bacause it takes so long to grow it
