I've been surfing these through a few So Cal swells so far, and have been holding back my critique till I thought it was right.
I purchased this fin set up from ProBox Larry with some boxes, . At first I laughed at them , I put them in this board that I usually ride with the J Belick fquad fins, I surfed a few spots that no one would see me with these freak shows. But as all my friends laughed at these fins and ridiculed me. I started to spray there faces, and run them down when they though they could burn me by dropping in.. The difference was amazing!
Outstanding drive, hold...but keeps your speed up through a cut back. amazing.
I get nothing from Probox, I like using there boxes, and they make solid fiberglass fins. Larry and Robin pay me nothing to preach this stuff. But if you got the balls to try different fins than the basic crap that FCS puts out...G3 what evers...then you should expand your horizions
I'm proud to say I love the Pro Box revolutions, with the Spitfire trailers!!
This set up hauls ass...And if you drop in on me...I'll run your ass down and spray your face...bioch!!
Oh by the way. Here's resinhead on the set up in question, happy as a *(&^%) in a cucumber patch getting ready to zip around the section,,,or get drilled...you can tell by the smile on my face what happens next.
Ditto Sharkcountry, I don't want to deal with the fiberglass dust. Plus my foiling skills are about on par with a blind person. I just ordered a pair of fins from Larry last week for the new fish I just made. I'm stoked on this fin system and the adjustability and simplicity. Plus it's compatible with my collection of fcs fins.
One ? – the bases on the fronts (Revolutions?) look muy grande. Maybe it’s just the picture, and the base isn’t as big as it looks? Couldn’t find any data on them on the Probox site. Do you happen to have tatooed their base measurement onto your right wrist just in case this question arose?

etmo, The Spit Quads are on our Blog www.Probox-Larryretrofits.blogspot.com. This Blog will have more conversions from all the systems to ProBox like this Fish from Barry Vandel from Future to ProBox. I will take some pics of speed dialer and Future controlers which inspired the Spit Quads with a explaination. Mahalo, Larry
nice review Mr. Head! i have those and only gave them a quick try. i figured they needed to be put in a fishy board but i don't have one. i got them the same time as my Belik Quads wich i LOVE and i haven't looked back... you've inspired me to give 'em another go...
oh yah, and +1 about Probox. i'm truly stoked on their product... viva la revolucion!
Howzit resinhead, It seems that everybody only thinks of Larry and Robin when it comes to ProBoxes but there was a friend named Mitch who was Robins partner in making the system and Larry came later, I just want all the boys here to include Mitch when it comes to the ProBox system. Mitch is a good guy who I helped when he started his ding repair business and that got me the second or third installation kit when they started up Aloha, Kokua
I installed 4 boxes into a couple of single fin boards today. As soon as I get the new quads Robin Mair has been working on, I’m going to do some serious testing. In the mean time I have all those fins Chipfins (Ben Chipper) sent to experiment with, and another set of traditional quads from Hanalei Fins.
The fins I ordered from Robin are just as radical as Jay’s. There’s a post here thanking Robin for the new egg style board that shows the fins.
Kokua’s right about Robin’s partner Mitch. We didn’t get to meet him, but he was the guy who did all the paper work to get the boxes and fins.
The Probox gang are top notch and very creative. The installation kit is very easy to use. Definitely worth trying.
Sorry about the Mitch thing...I knew of Mitch and i think we have met. It's kind of like the Sears and Roebuck thing. I never think of Roebuck? WTF.
The board these fins are in has a 13 1/2 tail so it's more of a speed egg. What is really nice in combination with 22 wide and 8ft long. Plus it's 1.5 eps. It doesn't surf the way you would think it should.
What I felt instaniously in changing out the fins was the amount of less drag the fins produced. (meaning when you are bellying in a wave after the session you can catch the wave to ripple all the way into the beach, the board feels dragless all the way to the sand)
when you catch a wave and come out of a bottom turn the fin set up makes the board feel drivey like a fish, but when you engage the rail on a cutback the fins allow you to release the tail without that feeling of loosing speed 3/4 of the way through. But once you are at the foam ball / redirection point of the wave....the lower aspect of these fins allow you to push the tail where ever you want them to be. So now you are facing back down the line...a little pump and the set up jumps back to the clean water on the wave and your back in business.
Don't get me wrong. With my other fin set up, you can do the same thing it's just that this set up is a lot more effortless. I think the goal here is to have a board that you don't know is under your feet. A board that you don't have to think about, an board that you don't have to worry about where your feet are......you just stand up and surf.
This set up is really close to that. really close.
These are the fins Robin is making for me. He says it feels like the rear fins steer the board. They will be made from G-10. Larry has these in Fiberglass.
Yes, Mitch absolutely deserves to be mentioned as it would not have happened without him!
But it might be worth your while to talk too Mitch and find out the real back story on ProBox and how the design that we have today (as opposed to what we started out with as our initial concept) came to fruition!
As for the reason you don’t see Mitch being mentioned more is because he purposely chose to avoid having any online presence with regard to ProBox, especially once we sold the system to Larry!
The ProBox website gives a reasonable account of the history and credits the people involved.
Mitch and I are still actively involved in selling ProBox product in Hawaii and around the world, and we have been spearheading future design, prototyping, testing and development efforts. But the business is now owned by Larry, which is why his name is most commonly associated with ProBox.
Maybe one day we should put together a photo of all the prototypes that were created, to show how the system progressed from the initial idea to what we have today, it would be a very interesting picture, the full story would also be very interesting!
I haven't started to mess with the inserts.........way too many variables?? But if I do I'll put the 4% red rears in when the bigger waves hit. Probably make it even go faster.......
Howzit Robin, I first met Mitch at Sausens before he started rough shaping blanks for Mark. The when he started doing ding repair I would stop by and give him tips on repairing and that was when he told me about you 2 working on a new fin system. To tell you the truth I was thinking " Oh no not another fin system " especially after seeing Clyde and john not really having a lot of luck with their system. But then Mitch came by my shop and gave me one of the first installation kits and could see that it definitely had the potential to be a good system. After doing my first install I was impressed with the ease of installation and the idea of being able to change the chant so easy really impressed me. I know Mitch is the kind of guy who likes to be in the back ground so I can see why he doesn't care about his name and the fame of the system. He has become the go to guy for repairs and is a very talented person and I am so glad that the system has taken off so well for you both. I am also glad I helped him learn the repair business because I knew he would end up being a good repair guy and just needed a little guidence which I did my best to give him. I don't know when I will make it back to Kauai since the doctors here are really working on helping me with the trauma from the cancer thing but when the time comes I will jump on a plane and come home. Aloha,Kokua
Resinhead, Thanks for the kind words my friend. Thought I would share another project that I have been working with Todd Patterson for almost a year that has now turned into a reality. THE first 100% recycled ProBox Fins from various Residental and Commerical waste streams (post consumer waste). I find it interesting that molding companies are now calling their over run material RECYCLED instead regrind and charge you more. Nice to see people taking more interest in being green, but the play on words always cracks me up. KOOLAID anyone,LOL Mahalo,Larry
