I wonder what the hand planer guys said about the power planer guys 75 years ago? Truth is it takes time to get skillful at anything. Im sure there are shapers who are just damn good at making a board with a cnc shaper.
Ever see any advertisements that gave a rats ass about the poor shmucks who slaved away producing skateboard decks and shoes, the latest clothing, snowboards, fishing rods, etc.??
Big Money is only interested in the celebrity who uses them.
“That would roll a shaper back to a kook? Right Normie?”
When someone doesn’t know how to sculpt an over-sized block of foam or wood into a clean, functional surfboard… in respect to what has traditionally defined a shaper… then hell yeah, they’re a kook.

So builders of Hollow Wooden Surfboards are kooks ?
I have one for fun and fishing!!!..I named it: “Ima ca-ca-kOOOk 2” …(“The Three Monkeys” of famous folklore make up the OOOs in the word kook).
…“MY NAME IS BOX” !!!..
…“It came to me daily from the ocean”…“AND I FROZE IT”…“FISH,AND PLANKTON AND SEA GREENS”…“FRESH AS HARVEST DAY”…“and then it stop coming, and they came”…“and I froze them”…“NOW i’m going to freeze you !!!”…“It’s… my job”…
Hollow wood surfboard builders certainly are no kooks.
Neither are they “shapers” in the original meaning of the word.
Shaping implies what Norm mentionned: sculpting.
I am not saying one is better than the other.
We are just not talking about the same thing: we are all board builders, but some of us shape while others “assemble” (or something like that, not sure about the word…)
