I knew what I wrote came off a bit too strong. but anyway, both the knost and warren guys rip. they are beautiful surfers to watch. I’ve got everything in my quiver from a 5’7’’ fish to thrusters to a 12 footer, so i have much respect and appreciation for all things surfing. I try to ride equipment that suits the conditions without making a ‘statement.’
my point about the alex knost/tyler warren thing revolves around my impression that they are really concerned with IMAGE and not surfing.
If you ‘just want to ride what you want to ride’ as one of those guys said, then go do it… what’s the big deal? … unless of course you’re more concerned with IMAGE . that’s my point.
Of course, no one ever accused me of having ANY syle at all, on land or in the water. hehe.
no worries bizgravy… I was slamming those guys pretty hard and their just kids.
Oh yeah bud. Compsand based on “Anderson pescado”. single fin/quad option. stoked. I’ve got the bottom skin on and am at the dreaded rail build out stage.
I shortboarded this weekend as it was epic by local standards! you gotta try out my hemp-sandwich!
that was Dane that day- some of the best contest surfing I have ever seen- amazing. Dane is has such clean style (you too Carl).Arrow has Dane, Carl, and also Andrew Barker shaping. All three great surfers, great shapers, nice fellows. We have got many magic boards from Arrow over the last few years. The kind of boards that friends ask after as if they were family members (“how’s the red dot? what’s up with the big blue board?”). My son snapped “the blue nose” in a contest at the Hook on a big day and the lots of friends were bummed.
I was especially interested in the red board that Devon Howard is riding. Looked like maybe a 6-7ft tri or 2+1 (i think i saw side fins) or something fun. Anyone see that or have more info on it somehow someway?
After watching two “downer” surf movies recently (Bra Boys and Archie), it was really refreshing to catch a view of One California Day. Being born and raised here, maybe I’m biased but it seemed to strike a chord in me.
I liked some parts better than others but overall the cinematography, soundtrack, wave quality and surfing left me stoked. There is something about the film quality and editing that seems way beyond the average surf film. No huge Mavericks or anything like that… just clean surfing on a variety of equipment by skilled surfers.
I don’t think I’ve seen sprout but I did see Single Fin Yellow. Funny that the Tyler chapter was a low spot for some… I commented that he was scoring some great tube rides in a shifty beachbreak venue. A high spot for me.
Alex Knost, who I’ve not seen on film before, impressed me with an almost theatrical style. His creativity, switchfooting and sudden dramatic stances struck me as different from anything I’ve seen before.
As already pointed out, the soundtrack was slicker than snot. I’d love to get a soundtrack CD… the website says the soundtrack is available but I couldn’t find it as a recording.
I double checked a frame grab of Devon Howard’s red board… it’s a round tailed single fin.
I’m adding this one to my relatively short list of favorites.
Watched it last June in the Surfilm Festibal. Since then i’ve been trying to get it, but to no avail. One of the best (surf) movies i’ve ever watched. IMHO it’s a shame that it had to feature Devon Howard, though… otherwise it could have been the best movie of all times.

so what is it? I thought some of his ride on this thing were great – smooth, fluid, and powerful…
Loved Tudor on the fish
gamboa malibu hull
---- i thought the Tyler stuff was better than Sprout or Single-fin yellow
Overall: very good flick. Nice to see all california for a change ( i ain’t from there – but CA has it’s place in surfing lore)
A Donald Takayama , 2 plus one set up, shaped by DT or Bill Shrozbe. Devon has been ridin these for years.
Is it as short as i think? That one shot (the still i posted previously) make that board look pretty short. Can’t tell for sure though. Looks like a fun little thing.
My bad on the fin thing, but I think im correct on the other info. I always try and get Devon to try a Liddle , and he has the perfect style for hulls , but likes what hes worked on with DT for his local spots.
OCD has officially become my favorite surf film since I first watched it… I’ve watched it at least 10 times since I ordered the DVD a couple of months ago. I Love the fact it’s all beautifully shot on 16mm, the angles are amazing, the storytelling is extremely good… You can just feel the passion and the dedication the makers had when they made this film… I think I’m gonna watch it again tonight…
