well, I rode it today !!
for 90 minutes .....
in tiny , knee to waist high glassy medium tide [luckily!!] rights
thanks heaps , Ross / 'P-Co' , for the go [...on your 'new' addition to what is fast becoming your 'mini- museum' of surfboards ! haha ]
maaan , I now have even MORE respect for greg noll and pat curren and those of that era , riding these heavy , difficult , clunky old boards at waimea ... and greg at pipeline [?!] ALL those years ago ?!!
Prior to taking this ol' clunker for a spin , I had always thought MY 9'4 felt heavy ?! ... HA !
but getting back on it , straight after riding this , it felt almost "featherweight" , and able to be turned with ease .
I think this is the MOST I have EVER felt a difference in boards , during the one surf session !!
"get out the waaay , here I come !" with the '60s board ....
compared to ...
able to turn around people in the way , with the winged keel and [wingless side] wavefins , on the MUCH lighter , and FAR more manouevrable , 'Cooloola' of mine .
Well...my curiousity has now been satisfied , regarding riding the original 1960s board !
I sure had heaps of FUN , angling , trimming , and ...." you can get it going , you can get it goin' pretttyyy faaaast " [as george greenough once said] .... once the initial inertia was overcome , that is !!
[IF there IS a "next time" , I may even curb my excitement long enough to remember to apply a coat of wax to it , before surfing it again , perhaps?!
cheers !

Hey Ben, I know exactly what you mean, I recently bought a old 9’6" Tony Olssen (circa '68 I think), not a D fin but a classic outline and rails.
They are incredible to paddle, once you get up to ‘ramming speed’ and you stop paddling and the board just keeps gliding as if you haven’t stopped.
It doesn’t turn (i.e. I can’t yet )and dog help anyone that gets in the way!
Yes, much respect to the guys in the day, I caught a couple of maybe 3-4’ only and all I thought about was how I was at the mercy of the board, how they did it in huge surf is incredible!
I too now look at my 9’er like it’s a short board, it’s so easy to ride by comparison and I think the old board weighs about 3x that of my newer board, it’s a huge difference but a lot of fun.
Cheers,
Mick.
