opaque laminations

i’ve decided to do my first attempt at coloured lams, i’m at the moment considering (and for the sake of argument) a dark grey/black opaque lam and a smoky transparent grey lam. i’ve been through the archives and think i’ve got my head around it except for one thing. can i buy a white opaque pigment and use that as a base for all my opaque colours and then colour that with coloured transparent tints? e.g. can i make my board the way i described only using a white opaque and a black transparent pigment?

any replies would be appreciated. i enjoy experimenting but i still have to buy the stuff.

cheers for the use of the site, its pretty damn cool

Forget the tint.

When you mix equal amounts of black and white opaque pigments, it come out black with a dull hue.

So you go 1/6 black, 5/6th white, to make about a neutral gray.

Experiement, as every company color works out differently…

test and test and test.

Generally as a rule of thumb the more pigment you add the more opaque it gets.

Test on a piece of scrap foam and use a pencil to write all over it. Cut many 2" square scraps of the SAME cloth that you will be using to lam with. Next get about a dozen small platic cups and pour a little resin into the first cup. Begin adding only a VERY small amount of pigment to it and then lam the test squares over the writing on the blank. This test the transpareny/opaquness of it. Add more pigment to get a richer more opaque color. You can do a few tests per cup becuae of resin/pigment ratio.

Once land a t a decent place, then simply mix the beg batch and mix enough to glass BOTH sides.

good luck
