open letter to max.

max came and asked met to teach him to sshape

and glass.

I made him sit while I shaped and glassed a board.

I gave him a big sheet of butcher paper to take notes and he asked me questions I answered crypticly.

Hey Uncle,

I'm finally back at it again!!! I got two boards I'm working on. But, I gots a question. I spent the last 2 hours searching the swalocks forums trying to answer my question....to no avail. But I tried to do my homework. So I'm coming to you for KNOWleDge!!! I wanna do 2 separate colors on either side of the stringer (tinted resin, not airbrushed). So, how the fuck do I do the lam and keep em separate?
Hope all is well,
Maximiliano
See all those marks from the sanding? I thought those were sand thrus when that happened on my boards?!?!? I thought I did a bad job....but maybe not?!?! Those aren't sand thrus?!?! Then what the fuck IS a sand thru? Did I do better than I thought?!?

this is my answer I think it would be prudent to share…

waht max wrote me recently inspired me to write

-those are sand thrus because the glassjob was applied over an irregular surface inadequately prepared

there comes a place in every step where you mutter to yourself or say aloud if someone else is in the room
.........,,,,,,,,,,thats perfect...........
!!!!!!!!!!!THATS PERFECT----is bullshit
this comment says I have achieved acceptable tollerance
and it is time to go on to the next step.
In the end they all look purty damn good
or at least better than the last piece o' eight
that you already wrecked and are ready to mothball or in my fathers
esteemed words "Shitcan"
you wanna good glass job ?
you wanna perfect glass job!
you gotta prep the surface to a perfect
(99.999 tolerance to 1/1000,000th of an inch)
humanly possible ?,I think not...
contoured smooth non porus surface
 then you gotta GOTTA G O T T A
Laminate with a slow batch resin
that will not go off premature
and not bleed out leaving dry cloth
and do a FAT HOT COAT and
not sand into the cloth
NOT SAND INTO THE CLOTH
enough resin to sand to avoid fabric reveal.
A SAND THROUGH EXPOSES FOAM
in the highest sense a glass reveal is a burn through
especially in a rub out with rubbing compound
or polishing compound.
adequate resin for sanding and polishing is not
a contemporary practice because it is weighty
and light weight boards are prefered.
This being the contemporary paradime
surfboards are throw aways.
Perfect in 21st century speak
is wrapped in plastic bag when delivered new aaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnddddd
thrown away in a plastic bag too.the ultimate would be to save the plastic bag it comes in to throw it away in.
...ambrose...
the surfboards you make should be "Legacy " boards not throw aways.
aproach them as such and enjoy them for what they are
not quib over what they are not.
the zen is real important.
wood boards should bedelivered
and thrown away in paper bags.
or wait ...never thrown away.
...aloha from waipouli...
why get old if you cant rant

that was some good ranting! (maybe I can boil it down to a new tagline)

Ambrose, with my dyslexia you’re making it awfully hard to read.

Howzit Brose, Did you think about tinting the foam before glassing the board. One of the things I like about doing odd pigment jobs directly on the foam is it seal the foam and keeps the resin from draining into the foam when you do the lamination, plus you don't have to have any darker color rails. Have you heard anything about Russel closing his shop in Newport? Aloha,Kokua

I want to have this engraved on my tombstone…

I think I understand exactly what he's trying to say.  Now THAT'S scary!

this is the first letter I wrote max-

tape off the blank and …

TINT THE FOAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
light sand and then glass clear!
apply the resin to the foam in one step per color i.e.
isolate one side and (like completely mask off
the other side so no drips of evil contaminating
color can transgress to the other color side.
like" I dont like when my mashed potatoes touch my peas"
apply the color with a squeegee.
the other option is apply the tint after glassing
before the gloss... like apply the color  the same
 isolationalist,seperatist method
draw backs to this quest or perhaps self abusing points
! you will always get at least a drip or finger print
of transmogrfication that will haunt you to your grave.
!
!wiggly lines in tape off!
,often the glasser colorist will
leave an area of clear foam
on either side of stringer and the
wiggly line and drips are super apparent.
the joy and natural happening of mistakes
i.e.sloppy overlap and or separation can be
quite interesting and pleasant when allowed
to find thier own 'zen'
when done on the foam every scratch that IS DEEPER
will take more tint and be irregular color
same with on the hot coat where the resin puddles
or is thin it will be a noticibly diffrent hue.
I.E. tint is a beetch poncho.
aka every gets great sex but you.
A real perfect job is a lot of xtre woik.
sloppy is the way to go
for me and wowzer on the dreeps
and a squeeglistico!!!!!
if you get a glass shop to do it they will charge lots extra
orif its cheap they just might do a job with lotsa flaws
end result bugging you out of your mind...if you get anal
about the mistake count...
In life
the joys of
an unmade bed
are high zen.
my wife is an oragami expert
she can do things with bed sheets
that are amazing while she is awake
 complex and orderly
when she is asleep her evil twin
 makes an unbeeeelieveable
combination of crush and fold...
I choose to arrange  the bed sheet order
whilst I am among the sheets
being the primary point of departure.
adventures in surfboard building
whoop whoop...
glass it clear and take it to an auto body guy
and have him spray it with car paint
and then clear......

Here’s how I satisfy the left go right tint dis side tint dat side but not da same color.

Go to keyboard.

Stick in address for “hurley” email.

Order color tint I want on left side (not req’d but I’m used to thinking & writing left to right).

Order tinted color I want on da right side.

…not forget to tell what stringer Iwant if I want one. (Optional)

Wait.

One day after the sun rises, I get a call from aguy named Ernie.

I meet him at a little pull out off the highway in “Anytown California”.

Ernie gives me blank with left tint, right tint and dis time it has one kine stringer.

I go home, which is also shop.

I shape da kine dis dat half breed blank.

I glass it with clear UV poly resin.

I freelap it which saves $ for beer.

I do sum other necessary stuff - all total, 6 hrs later I’m done.

I go to beach while other guyz reinvent wheel, whine a little bit or a lot about special bitch order.

brosey,

i use rustyoleum..........now comes in many colors shades,and.................

i love the way rattle-=can paint flows over water surf...........aces.

it ruins a board some say...........but done correctly...........can hold up for many moons.

plus ding work made ez..........sand ,fix and re-paint.

if you prefer,,,,,,,,,,,

you can even give it a showroom finish with clearcoat and color sanding.

really,

i like the zitty,pocked,orange peels!!!!!!!!!!!

i've painted two of my main stix and havin' a hardtime justifing why not paint them all!!!!!!!!

people say i'm lazy............wastin' my life away.............my boards are worth..........less,,,,,,,,, because of the paintin'..........no probs..............i ttell hiem there's only solutions.

herb

Herb, I’ve been using the Rustoleum rattle can plastic paint for several years. I does hold up. If you get a good nozzle and do it right, iz not dat bad.

sharky,

on the outside of the glass?

you know the finish.

i remember as a kid we did it,and the elders would scream at us, how wrong it was...............painting over a board was taboo, and reduced the value to nothing.............tell that to randy french.

i also recall how good it rode.

also it gave weaker soft glass jobs some improved strength.

and...........heck if you didn't like it .........just wash it in paint thinnner.

herb

No ka oi kono.
