Open letter to the San Diego/So.Cal Crew

Howzit Again Keith, Looking at that pile of balsa I can say you will definitly need a extra large container of glue. Can’t wait to see what you make from it.Aloha,Kokua

Hi Keith.

Any time after January10th or so would be good for me. I’m going to start working on some plans to figure out how much stock I’ll need from the pile.

Cheers

could you guys who have posted so far on this thread check the techniques for doing balsa rails thread …

and see if what i asked may apply to you …

regards

BERT

sorry its the" rails on balsa sandwich boards" thread …

hey thanks for the encouragement Rhino and 4est . . .

anycase I was heavily surprised about what Bert said:

Quote:

my first choice would be you guys here who have taken the plunge …

if we can get the right crew together then i would say it would be worth setting up a custom facility in the states first …

we will be in the states in late jan, in san diego …

so i would interested to see if anyone would be in a posistion to take up that offer to make up the skill set required to make something happen …

at this stage its only an idea , but it depends on whether the right people will come forward , at least when we are there we can meet in person and i can see some work up close , as it gets closer to the dates i will let you know where i will be and when , plus have the product on hand to show what type of boards were thinking of…

if you dont want anyone to know your interested by posting openly , you can always pm me and we can look at a scheduled meeting while were there …

im confident the sander , glasser and shaper skills will be in abundance , and everyone is welcome to put your name down if you have these skills , but at this stage the bagger would be the most valued as its a skill that is difficult to teach a novice from scratch , its way easier to train someone once they have the basics …

so many things can go wrong , and by what ive seen from you guys ,a lot of learning has already been done …

i know for a fact if some of you guys were in OZ , you would already have a job …

no promises at this stage , just curious to see if it would be possible , but we will be there anyway …

regards

Wow. Thanks Bert.

On a diff note, Jan sounds good . . .

At Keith’s house Sunday…

Ok all you want O’Piece of EPS guys…bring some cash! You know who you are 'casue you posted in the the threads about EPS and StingRays post. Here’s the deal…

Tax included, I will will call pick up a #2 block of EPS for $390.00. But I need the cash first.

This is what we get,; 39"x49"x97"

the 8’ block (97") when you split it in half (49" dived by 2). Gives us 2 blocks at 24.5". Cut the 39" dim in 6.5" sections

gives us 12 blanks at 8’ x 24.5" x 6.5"

This is $32.50 for a 8’ blank. Let’s call it $4.10 a foot. 6’ blank = $24.60/10’ blank $41.00. If you want something over 8’ it gets tricky. Buy two pieces. Or hook up with someone wanting a six foot blank and buy there extra two feet. I want to shape a 8’ semi gun and a fish. So I’ll have an extra two feet available. You just glue it up like Benny does (it’s in the archives, HA!)

Where are we going to hotwire the bloack up? We can do it at my house in Laguna Niguel, or???

If this works out maybe next time we get a 16’ block (like $750). I will post this in the other two threads.

Its not going to work for me, but thanks anyway!

I can’t make it to Keith’s house this weekend. Already committed for Sunday ,too late to cancel. (building a fence)

I have cash and want a piece of the foam. I have enough money for two pieces if we don’t get enough people.

Thanks surf4fins for researching ,and calling, and pricing the foam

Have a great day

Ray

Sign me up for two 8’ blanks.

Rick

I would love to get my hands on enough for 2 blanks, if theres more available ill definately take enough for 4 blanks of eigth foot. Is sunday just a money exchange day cause i already had plans. I could mail you what you need, should only take a day to get there.

I would like 1 and would be happy to buy 2 to make sure you cover costs. I can also shlep foam to my place in Rancho PQ if that would help anybody else. What kind of beer do you facilitators (Keith, Tim) drink?

Matt

you know who you are, you gave me money…weeelll, most of you did

I placed the order, I should be able to pick it up Monday or Tuesday from the Chino Insulfoam Plant. Better get them rail templates ready boys!

PS. FOAME-Z is planning to start carrying RR Epoxy and Additive F next week.

My word…I guess i’d better get my rockers in order? Pronto!!! Lets HOT WIRE!

Awesome!

My boss wants me to work every Sat.

Can we have the Hot Wire Party on a Sunday afternoon?

Ray

HOT WIRE, HOT WIRE, HOT WIRE, ALL I WANT TO DO IS HOT WIRE.

Just when and where

Mark

Heya,

I picked up the block last night. Saturday is a good day as we will be busy or out of town the next three weekends. How does 10 to 2’ish sound? I will be home. I built a hotwire cutter. Tested it using the battery charger on 12v/12a on a piece of EPS#1. Butta. Might need some more wire in case of breakage.

24246 La Hermosa Ave. Laguna Niguel 92677

Green 2 story, black roof, brick walk way.

PCH to Niguel Rd. (Salt Creek is right there) Right on Niguel Rd if coming from the south. 4 miles to La Hermosa (signal right after Marina Hills). Right on La Hermosa. 9 houses up on the right. From the 5 exit Crown Valley and go towards the ocean. 4 miles. Left on Niguel Rd.(Look for Taco Bell and the Chevron station) Left on La Hermosa.

If Saturday is not good, we can make arrangements. Let me know.

I’m shifting around my work schedule so I should be able to make it Sat. I’m half way done building a hot wire cutter. An engineer friend of mine is working on getting me a used Variac. I bought 4 feet of Nichrome wire at the craft store in the model train dept. Found a good deal on wire at McMasterCarr.com so I will be getting more soon…

“Share the stoke!”

Ray

rub some candle wax on your cutting guides to help smooth out the slide

if you do get a wire break rip it out quickly, if the wire/foam cool before you pull the wire out it will be sealed in

go slow and you should not have a breakage problem

have fun

my wife is in traffic school all day. Think she’ll mind of I use sex wax instead of candle wax?

I can make it on Saturday. Could be there between 10-12 or so.

Got a vacuum pump off of ebay, ordered some balsa and building a hotwire bow now.

See ya then!

Rick

just an FYI guys, I just ordered RR Epoxy from Hank Johns at Graphite Masters. Three gal. kit for $181 delivery to my door. Some other places have quite a $ amount mark up.
