He’s got a few carpentry skills, worked in a boat yard, washed windows, given surf lessons/surf shop work and is willing to do pretty much anything - within reason (ie:legal).
I warned him that it’s a tough place to find work - in '73, I ended up working at the “Gas and Wash” on Milpas cause it was the only job I could find…and out of 6 of us, I was the only one without a college degree - the others wanting so desperately to stay in S.B. after graduating.
If any Swayloholics know of anyone in the area looking for help/labor, please P.M. me and I’ll pass it along.
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, he’s not into board construction - graphics, yes - but too impatient for results as far as shaping/glassing goes. But will tell him to check it out - may need a sweeper/clean-up guy to break in.
S.B. to Ventura? At least you get to check out some great breaks to and from…
BTW - the Clark lams look great on my last few blanks - Thanks again!
i live in downtown sb and i have to work in ventura now…aye!
The humor of that statement in light of the job/housing situation in Santa Barbara…wait…maybe it’s irony…at least you shouldn’t be stuck in traffic! Hee hee hee…
I hear that new housing developments in Santa Paula (east of Ventura) are becoming mini-colonies of new UCSB profs and administrators…
I did my stint with the little red hat, pinstriped shirt, and black poly pants for two years at the Sizzler. If it is still there. Im sure the uniforms have improved. Well within biking distance, tips etc. Start bussing tables and go from there. OK now it’s public knowledge. My therapist said I should do this.
Don’t worry to much, I can remember telling my dad I could not find a job. Then the money stopped and magically I found a job.
I dont have a hook up, but I would recommend Channel City Lumber. My roommate from UCSB worked there until recently, and its a great family owned lumber yard and hardware store. Sounds like a place he might fit in.
I always loved visiting that place; tools everywhere. Well, there was that one time that I kicked the bathroom door to splinters due to a whiskey related issue so I was kinda embarrassed to tell them why i needed a new door and router bits, but thats neither here nor there.
IV is a sink or swim town! Surfing Devereaux kept me sane.
nels- the avenue area has been bought up by sb people.in fact a specific area along the ave. is called little santa barbara. thus, it doesn’t surprise me the migration continues to the east side of town and beyond
Problem is, he can’t find a job…plus he has no vehicle, which compounds the problem.

Try Santa Barbara Door & Window Works on Aero Camino (off Hollister across from the airport), just down from Channel City Lumber. Or Utt Construction, right next door. He’ll have to be motivated, on time, and willing to learn the trade to cut it. Utt has his cabinet shop there
what about the airport?? might be something he can do there.even better, become a taxi driver, then he would have transportation and a job(and make decent$ too)
Tell him if he wants to find/keep a job and have time to surf…MOVE OUT OF IV. Also, if he ever is going to go to school, he has to take the bus…hard to find motivation to take a 25min bus downtown just to go to class. He should move downtown. More job opps as well.
Couldn’t agree with you more - and I tried to tell him but…headstrong, impulsive youth that he is…
Wants to be in I.V. to be with/around friends - at least some have vehicles…
Unfortunately, due to a “misunderstanding with an officer” while in I.V. last winter, he can’t drive in CA. until April so, he has to tough it out until then…
Thank you all for the suggestions. Sure wish I had access to this in '73 - would have saved me months of drudgery at the old “Pit Stop Gas and Wash” up on Milpas (was out there a couple of years ago and was surprised to see it’s still there).
Youth would be an ideal state…if it wasn’t wasted on the young.
