Other kind of paint

Can a regular surfboard be painted with automobile paints like metalized grey or some other opaque colors??

Thank you all…

I have painted a few longboards with auto paint. Came out great. Still look great. Used chrome illusion on one and mixed to this deep blue. It doesnt change like those ghetto green and purple caddys. Its hard to explain untill you see it in the water. When you change direction, from the beach it looks like the whole board changes colors from bright blue to deep purple. It is very hard to paint and expensive unless you have the equipment to do it yourself. have pics but not on the internet.

I’ve done some painting with acrylic laquer on both foam and on the hotcoat and swore off it forever.

The problem is that most auto paints have a sheen or gloss that repels the resin. It can work on the hotcoat, but you have to lightly sand off the shine with sandpaper. Also, if the gloss coat takes too long to go off, it will start to dissolve the laquer.

If you painted it like a car: all on the outside, then clearcoat it, you’d probably have better results. But that’s an area I’ve not explored. I just went to water-based acrylics painted on the foam. Pinlines on the hotcoat. Now I need much less aspirin. Doug

Thats how I did mine “just like a car”. Im not sure it would be great for production but you can def do some interesting stuff for yourself.

Maybe use a car paint that is meant for a clearcoat, they are usually flat before the clear right?

Yes, but metallics lose their irredescence ( that metallic sparkle ) on the foam because the foam is a porous surface. It needs a smooth flush surface. You can paint metallics on the glass but you will have to super fine sand the surface (like down to a 1000 grit) or the sanding scratches will show. The best way to do it is to shoot a gloss coat and sand that down to 1000 grit then paint it. Shooting a gloss over that will probably react so you may want to finish it with a sprayed on automotive clear urethane. Basically the same process one would do to paint a car.

I have used metallic silver powder in the resin looks neat. And if you really want sparkle use small glitter. My old 6’8" reshaped
