Besides your standard pre-molded blanks (e.g. clark foam), is there a similar consistancy foam product out there that can be used to shape a board? Perhaps, a similar consistancy foam produced for some other industry at a lower cost? If you have any suggestions please post. I’ll take the considerable labor investment over the financial any day!
i saw some show on the discovery channel a few months back. it was about making a surfboard. i forget which company it was. but anyway, they had big blocks of foam with a pvc stringer inserted. they would use your ordinary rocker template and trace the line. then would use a hot wire to cut out the blank. the blocks were at least 3’ tall. maybe this much bulk is cheap. also, maybe you could make your own molds and pour your own foam???i would keep someone pretty busy pouring molds here in nj//////////////////////////////////////////////

It has a pvc stringer, different colors too. There is walker foam, but i think they are longboards only, but i might be wrong. There is a AUS. foam company, but then you got to deal with shipping and that’s going to cost you. I’m sure some of the other guys here might know of some others. Hope this helps you. I would like to try poring some foam myself, and give it a try. Would have to get some directions and surpplies for the job. Later, Stephen Berube
any chance you’re an east-coaster?
any chance you’re an east-coaster? Yup, I’m at school now in North Carolina, but i’m from Daytona Beach, Fl. I shape up here at school on the weekends, and sometimes do runs to daytona do drop off boards and run to Melborne to pick up blanks, and then to Jacksonville to sun cure for other supplies, on the way back to school, saves me money. any chance you’re an east-coaster? perhaps…thanks for the advice
do you rent a garage? or shape in the basement?
do you rent a garage? or shape in the basement? Rent a storage unit that works well. That is when i’m at school in NC. When i’m home in Daytona. I shape in my dads garage, very big with plenty of room. When i graduate, we are building me a shaping shop in my dad’s back yard. I’ll buy a house, but won’t shape there. To many people will be stopping by all the time. It will be better at my dad’s house. I don’t get boughter at my dads house, so it should work out well. Later, Stephen Berube

This is what I have done with my blank, its made out of eps foam block. if u gonna make few blanks, buy a 3 ft height block, you may shape 4-5 blanks ( depending on the rocket height ). P.S. Buy the 2lb per cubic meter density. There is always, someone that’s got to be a *sshole about spelling. I’ll agree with you on spelling. I was never good with writing papers and spelling. Every paper that was assign, i had to take to the writing center and get helped with, but don’t come on this board and rip on people. At lease on went onto college,to better myself. I’m a CS major not a english major. It wasn’t my idea to go on to college. I was almost killed in the middle east back in 98. I was serving as a Airborne Sniper with the Army, and was ran over by a Tank, YES, a tank, of 69 tons ran me over. I spent 9 month and two weeks getting back to some what normal, so if you want to rip on a VET that saw action and helped people in need. Go ahead and rip away, but i though this was a board site for shaping and glassing, etc. Not a site to pick on someone. Later, Stephen Berube
Rightcoaster, This is Crabie from Hong Kong, here I can get cheap price high density foam block easily, I order eps foam block from a supplier that charge me US$ 30.00 a block of 6’ x 2’ x 1’H ( capable making 2 shortboard blanks ). I can order from another offering me 8’x2’x1’H, in fact I dont need a longboard. Noodles and Mike D. will have the idea where you can find the foam block, my experience tell me foam block longer than 8 ft could be hard to find and may cost you a lot to buy. If you can get Clark Foam from your local supplier, this must be a first choice since eps foam blank is much much difficult to sand into detail. Besides, only epoxy resin is the only choice could be worked with eps foam, that means a opaque blank instead of transparent, why? cos the epoxy yellowish easily. Just a apple to apple comparison, if I can get Clark Foam surfboard resin here, I wont choose epoxy board, most surfers are reluctant to ride on it. Even though epoxy boards are much stronger and ding resistant. Regards, Crabie

Crabie, what kind of swell do you get in your area??
not big but enough to surf, it depends on the weather, normally May - Sept is the best time to surf ( 10-20 ft ), cos the typhoon normally comes between this months. Plan to take a visit here? Regards, Crabie
