Ouch, that rally hurts.

Just had my wife save my eyesight after splashing poly resin in my left eye…DUH!

As I was dashing from the garage with one eye barely open I knocked the board off the bench onto the floor.

After 20 minutes of eyeball rinsing with a squirty water bottle (felt like a high pressure hose) I returned to the board (on the floor), no damage at all just an unfinished lap at the tail…now done awaiting sanding. Visit to the hospital, message from doctor for my lovely wife “jobs a good un”. He also told me I was lucky that she knew what she was doing and that se was so thorough.

Man that stuff burns.

Lesson learned, wear goggles!

Did that once with MEK (not the knocking off the stand of the board, but the getting some in the eye). It was one of those moments where I paused and said…I should probably wear eye protection as I snap this squirter back on the bottle…nah…SQUIRT. Glad to hear the 20 minutes of rinsing works for poly resin, too.

Glad your OK Jase.

Kieth said getting MEKP in hie eye was one of the most painfull experiences of his life.

I remeber the episode of neibours where Brad got some in his eyes.

Howzit 11ft, Had a friend who got catalyst in his eyes and he was blind for 2 days, said it was the worst experience of his life. Aloha,Kokua

A long time ago, a guy I worked with took some resin and catalyst home with him to use in some hobby project he was working on. He pumped himself a pint of resin into a plastic bottle and he filled an empty Visine bottle with the catalyst. He put the Visine bottle in his pocket and went home. Some how he forgot about the Visene bottle. His girlfriend when doing the laundry found the Visine bottle in his shorts and put it in the medicine cabinet. A few weeks later she used the Visine and blinded herself for a few days.

OUCH! I thought about putting some alchohol/vinegar ear drying solution is a Visine bottle. It’s a good little dispenser. A couple drops in each ear, done. I would be very handy and way cheaper than the drugstore stuff. Decided against it for this very reason. The last thing I wanted was someone dropping alchohol and vinegar into their eye.

Howzit Ryan, Go to your local drug store and ask for a 2oz bottle with an eye dropper, that’s what I put my ear mix in. One thing is after using, make sure the dropper doesn’t have any of the mix in it since the alcohol will dry out the rubber part of the dropper and it will crack and be of no use.Aloha,Kokua

Dirty acetone in the eye hurts pretty badly also. Fortunately, that’s about the worst thing I’ve done to myself

in all my years, unless you count the broken razor blades (cutting fin g/o) and resultant hideous slices.

One of my boatbuilder friends did a good one a long time ago. He was working at a large manufacturer, where they have tanks

of resin outside and a gravity feed system inside. A fitting blew off and he got a head-to-toe resin bath. He said he closed his eyes

and didn’t open them for almost two hours, until after they’d cleaned him up at the hospital. He was sick for days.

Man, these stories really drive home the fact that you NEED to wear eye protection when working with this stuff…When I was making guitars for Taylor, I got a solid squirt of Jet Glue in my eye…Had to go to the ER and that was NOT fun…Felt like a dime sized piece of sandpaper on my eye for a few hours.

Stay Safe!

I used to know a ding monkey who used to repair beach boy rentals at his home who got a good hair and face full of catalyzed resin. He said that he was lucky he had a new gallon of acetone near by. He said he was most worried about having to get a haircut. Walking disaster.

Yeah, it burned like hell, but rinsed for 20 minutes, called poison control, and they asked if I could still see, and since I could, they said I was OK. Scary stuff, though. I now have several sets of safety glasses, so that if I can’t find one, I’ve always got a backup.

I also suffered from MEKP into my eye 10 years ago.

Pretty bad experience.

Why I am still wearing no eye-protection???

Neira, no idea why you aint wearing eye protection but realised half way through some work last night I’d forgotten to put my gogs on. Some of us never learn! I’ve now put a nail above where I keep my resin and stuff with the gogs hanging on it, you never know, I might remember to put them on if I see them. I might try and find a picture of Richard Prior in See no evil hear no evil to put there aswell as a reminder.

If you do damage your eye/s the only thing they can do is perform a corneal graft.

I’ve had 2 and they really, really, really, really, really, really, really hurt…

I see through dead peoples eyes now…

Wear goggles, please…

after getting resin and or dirty acetone in my eyes a few times i sprung for this.

in my opinion the best investment for some one using chemicals that can really hurt you.

Darth,

Could you give a brand name for your mask, where you bought it, and about how much it cost? Safety goggles do not seem to fit very well above my mask and glasses don’t keep the shit out of my eyes. Mike

Hey Mike - if that’s like mine, it’s the 3M full face respirator, series 6000. They come in sizes so the exact model number matches the size (sm, med, lg). I think they typically retail for a hundred bucks or a bit more but I’ve been able to buy a couple on Ebay for around 60 or so.

I recall there are other manufacturers too but I like the fit of the 3m version, the over-the-head adjustments are easy.

These things are great, I highly recommend. I used to use goggles and half-mask but this doesn’t fog up and its all one piece so I lose it less often!

Thanks Keith. Mike

Keith - or anyone else,

Anyone know how the 6000 series work with glasses? Can’t see to work without them…

It kind of looks like the ear pieces on glasses would prevent getting a good seal around the temples.

Tried calling 3-M tech. but couldn’t get through - on hold for 30 minutes…

Thanks,

Pete

you need a part 6878 “spectacle kit” …
