i am leaving for the outer banks, nc on thurs. night. does anyone have any > experience in these parts. looking for some good breaks. I frequent the OBX, and there are many spots to surf starting in Kitty Hawk and going all the way to the Buxton Lighthouse. If you have a 4x4 you can explore and even get a spot to yourself. The town of Rodanthe has some of the better spots, Pea Island is good. The best way to know where the surf is good is to look for alot of trucks/cars with undone surf racks. However, since your not familiar with the area, I would suggest just keep looking as you drive. Once on the island there is only one road in and one road out.

Like the other dude said, there’s only one road and plenty of breaks on them. Good luck!!

thanks. i am staying at the KOA. i read this is a very good area, with Waves and Salvo. my friend has 4x4, so we should do ok.

I’m not sure where you are now, but looks like you should make a U-turn and head to California. It’s about to happen.

There is a secret spot just north of the Texaco gas station as you head back north of the KOA. The road is Sea Haven and the is limited parking, but when it goes off it’s great. By the way the KOA will rape you if camping in a tent ($40.00 a night). Depending on when you are going, you can get a hotel room for about $10 more (after labor day). If you are camping, I would suggest the camp site at Oregon Inlet (State Run) or the camp site behind Lisa’s Pizza (great food) in Rodanthe right near the fishing pier (first town on Hatteras Island). S-Turns is right at the beginning of this town as well. Good luck. By the way when are you going, and where are you coming from? I will be heading down next week or so (watching the storms)!

i will be arriving late thurs. night. heading home sometime on sunday. any thoughts what a tropical storm will do as far as waves?

I’m not sure where you are now, but looks like you should make a U-turn > and head to California. It’s about to happen. Outer banks in the east. Fairybanks in the west. Free camping, and parking. And, if your really quiet, you can see all of the little fairies at the New Castle. have fun [blush]

i will be arriving late thurs. night. heading home sometime on sunday. any > thoughts what a tropical storm will do as far as waves? Come on Teddy , for once do something on your own. Go see the place, both sides of the Cape break. That covers most wind directions. Then the next time you come up here , you’ll have more to go on. Yes , tropical storms make waves. More often than not , the south facing beaches will fire. Bring your fishing pole and learn something about the Gulf stream. Don’t tell anyone what you find , it might not be the same again.

Edouardo & Dolly moving up and toward the coast. Cali crowds vs OB solitude? Go east young man.

I’ve been staying in Rodanthe for the last 15 years. “S” turn is right when you come into Rodanthe, just look for all the vechiles parked there. The secret spot some one mentioned is where I usually surf, it’s down the street from where we rent a house, Sea Oats Drive or SurfSide, I forget. All the streets are private so you can’t park on them You can park at the old life saving station, Chicamacomico, check on that spelling, walk to the beach and when you hit the beach walk a little north. Also there is a spot that is just north of the pier and south of Chicamacomico. Sometimes, when just my daughter and I go, we camp at the National Campground at Frisco, real nice place. Then you can go to either side of the point and get different conditions. If you weren’t out at 1st steet in SIC last week you missed it. Have fun, Frank.

Try steamers in Pea Island. S-turns is a good, sometimes crowded spot. Definitly the lighthouse. Gets crowded with tourist but when it’s on, it can be a tube fest. For the most part, just pick a spot. Took a trip this weekend to see Slayer in norfolk, Tweaked my back at the show, could’nt surf perfect, clean overhead surf in kitty hawk the next day. Wound up being the best day since spring. Slayer rocked so not all was lost. Anyways, check it out and leave your cares behind, your in OBX baby!

any good spots for when it’s small, like this weekend??

any good spots for when it’s small, like this weekend?? Try Frisco pier, maybe.

since I hit this discussion late . . and it sounds like you know the place . … what is this KOA they’re referring to in the string up above . … a place to stay at . …? would you know?

since I hit this discussion late . . and it sounds like you know the place > . … what is this KOA they’re referring to in the string up above . … a > place to stay at . …? would you know? The KOA is in Rodanthe or Waves, they are right next to each other. It is really for “campers”, it you are using a tent you will be alittle out of place. It has a pool and looks nice. If you are using a tent definetly go down to Frisco. The National Campground is there and is one of the best places I’ve stayed, cold showers only. You camp in the dunes and if you pick the right spot it can be pretty secluded. You can pull “campers” in there also. In Frisco you have access to either the pier or the Lighthouse and conditions can really be different depending on which side of the point you are on. I’ve also had good days right at the campground. Frisco also has a privately run campground, Frisco Woods, but I never stayed there but it does have hot showers. You will have to drive to the beach and if you have a 4X4 you can drive on the beach. OBX can be alot of fun.

thanks . . . always wanted to go to “the carolinas” - this just piqued my interest more
