Hi everybody - Just got to try my new tri-plane/edge board. very cool. My question is in regards to the Paddle fin - I have it about 16" from tail on a 8’8" board, and, as I haven’t used one before, am wondering if it will be looser if I move it up a bit - sounds obvious, but I know this type of fin is to work a little different so???
Heyo,
Sounds pretty far up to me but a lot depends on the outline and rocker. Like any single fin, you’re going to have to do the dreaded “dialing-in”. Get one of those quick change bolts, cut some notches in the box for reference and start moving it around. Maybe start with it pegged in the back, then middle, then pegged front. Then start catching the 'tweener positions. 1/8 of an inch can make a HUGE difference. I used an 8.5 inch deep, very stiff paddle Halcyon made for me in my edge board. Very directional, but lacked drive. Made my single fin feel a lot like a thruster. It liked to be double-pump-bottom turned. Not bad but way, way different than a Greenough flex fin.
Hey Lee - Thanks for writing - I look through lots of archives on this - not much about this funtion/tendacy. Mine is flexable, seemed to have some good push the new board is longer, straighter than my others, but w/the “edge technology” it goes on the rail to turn like nothing - bam, I’m carving - so not hanging up! I’ll keep you posted. I think once I cut the tail off, and put the torsion bar on it will turn alot “sharper.” Ha?! Viva la differance!!! tO
saw a fellow with a paddle fin in a yater longboard down in hatteras over easter break, he had it somewhat up but not a lot, and the board realllllly ripped! ever more than they usually do! experiment!
