Anybody have experience with paddleboards? My girlfriend is moving back home to Canada from here in Hawaii, but wants to stay in surfing shape. Wants me to shape her a paddleboard to take home with her. She’s 5’4", 125 lbs, very athletic. She plans to use it in lakes only, so no worries about rough water. I know very little about paddleboards, and have never ridden one or even inspected one up close, so I need a complete education. Saw some stuff in the archives, but nothing for a smaller person like my girlfriend. I’m wondering things like appropriate dimensions for her size, what type rails are commonly used, and if a rocker is needed. I plan to go with eps/balsa compsand construction, so it should come out pretty light.
Thanks in advance!
The shorter the paddle board the better for staying in surfing shape. Ive been paddling a 14’ and 17’ 25+ miles a week and when I went to the fish fry I could barely paddle out. I hadn’t surfed for a couple months but thought all the paddle boarding wouldve kept me in paddling shape. Not so. It seems the efficiency and design of the boards require slightly different muscles or different use of the muscles. I wouldnt go any longer than 12’. The hull rocker and flatness/roundness will be determined by the water conditions…rough water=more rocker/flatter rail to rail, smooth water=less rocker/rounder rail to rail. Shes light so thickness shouldnt need be any more than 4"…3-3.5" may suffice. Just do a quick boyancy/dislapcement calculation.

google joe bark paddle boards
make sure the girl books a flight

maybe that is the way to decide the length
how much do ya wanna spend on shipping…
Thats funny you mention the flight, I just got off the phone with her and we were talking about it. She’s flying some Canadian airline and they told her the longest surfboard they’ll accept is a 9’8". We’re trying to decide if that’s long enough, or if we should just try to ship it cargo on another airline. Looks like that may only cost around $100, maybe less. Thanks, Ambrose, I’ll check out those sites you mentioned.

the satisfaction of paddling
is not diminished by the dimensional length of the board
the glide is it’s own reward.
length is intoxicating because it extends the glide.
maybe buying a finished used board
already on the mainland would have merrit
