paint type for pin line?

I looked in the archives and coul not find any info on paint type. I dont want to use resin or Posche pens. I want to mix colors to make my own. I will be putting the pin line on the sanding coat and then gloss coat or another sanding coat over top of the pin line. I would like to go to my local art store to get the materials. People use water based paints for air brush, but I am not sure if I could use them for pin lines. Thank you for your time, Ryan http://www.dirtyglassing.com

I dont know. i always use resin pins the only thing that will work.

You can brush on acrylics… The “Basics” by Liquitex work well and are reasonably priced. You might even get away with poster paints, but they’re pretty low quality paints.

you can use acrylic paint just as it comes out of the tube, (same paint used in airbrush). i use a small squeegee to apply it. let it kick and peel the tape. a piece of 100 grit sandpaper wrapped around a razorblade and run around the edge of the pin line will give you super clean lines.

Howzit Ryan, Posca pens are just acrylic paint in a pen and will lay down a thinner pinline than paint which will make for a smoother gloss finish. Aloha, Kokua

ryan- we have used the BREAKTHROUGH brand for foam and hotcoat color- the brand should be available at most paint/supply stores. we also mix clear BREAKTHROUGH into the color mix for hotcoat color- yellow, orange, red, green are the colors that ran when painted over with gloss. the best results were achieved when we painted the pins on and then sprayed the clear over that- let it dry, pull tape, and sand VERY lightly. then do your glossing step. hope that helps- shaper out-

RYAN- BREAKTHROUGH IS WATER BASED AND CAN BE THINNED WITH THE WATER ALSO.

Ryan, I’ve used Delta paints from Michaels $.99. I tape off the pins to be painted on a smooth 220 sanded hot coat deck and air brushed the lines on. I usally do 3 light coats letting them dry really well between coats. I use 3M fine line tape from the automotive store, its really expensive tape $8 per roll but you get no bleeding if you burnish the tape down with a finger nail or something and it puts amazingly crisp lines down, no razor blade with sand paper or touching up stuff. Pull the tape when dry, and lightly wipe the lines with a moist tack cloth to get any little paint chips that have come off the tape and landed on the board. Gloss as usual, It looks exactly like a resin pin, and is very durable. -Jay

I like what Resin Head speaks of.The key to whole deal is a good sand job, good tape, and spraying on multiple thin coats. You have to thin the paint to spray it,if you lay the paint down too thick it will bleed under.I usually use resin but at times I will do them with “Plasticoat” brand Auto Touch up spray paint,it is acrylic lacquer. Its thin and drys fast so the multi coat thing is still important.Lots of stuff in the archives on pinlines.Have fun.

Howzit Mr.Clean, don’t forget the trick of laying down the pin with 1 hand and using a hair dryer right behund it to instant dry the pin, no bleeding under the tape.Aloha, Kokua
