Painting My Boards

I’m a novice shaper/glasser that needs some advice.

At what point in the glassing process is it best to paint your board. I know you can add pegment to the resin but I would love to paint designs on the board outside of resin’s limitations. Such as custom drawings, paintings, and so on. I don’t want to use paint markers after I’m done the glassing step, because when I shop for a board I prefer a board to be super smooth and paint markers above the Hot Coat never felt good.

What type of paint should I use? And where in the process of glassing is best?

Thank you,

Bill

…hello, if you use paint instead of resin pigments, tints or markers you should apply the coats onto the foam, let dry THEN laminate the board.

The paint should be water based like Tempera or acrylic; dilute them at minimum and use an spray gun.

You paint the board after your final sanding of the blank-just before you glass it. Acryllic paints work well for me, and I use Createx airbrush paints. You need to tape the stringer, as paint on the stringer will affect the glass bonding. Also, you need to take care that you don’t put the paint on too thick or it will crystalize during the glassing process. I learned all this the hard way.

Thank you guys
