paipo design

have an odd cut-off, looking to make a beginner-friendly paipo for my little lady

The blank:

Any suggestions? Templates?

Ja,

Isn’t that “cutoff” about 6’ + , though ?

If it IS, why not a BOARD, mate ?

[no comments about your dog wants to go out to play, though !]

That looks like a cross section of an airplane wing. Pretty cool. Given what I presume the size is compared to your dog, you could probably make 2-3 paipos. I don’t have any templates, but a languishing website I still keep afloat has some ideas. Check out vagabondsurf.com and also rod’s paipo page. At vagabondsurf.com look around “alternative vehicles” and the paipo sections for some old ad scans and photos of prone things not porn (porn - prone…hmmm…better not go there). Also League of Lamaroos page.

Same goes for paipo design ideas…a lot of archived info on wood paipos, especially under the name Roger Wayland. I need to do something more with all that when I get a chance, but if you poke around there you will find something of use.

Sifting through a lifetime of debris, surfing and otherwise, I did find an old Newport Paipo ad package with dimensions and sketches, but I’m moving and can’t really do anything at the moment…in fact unplugging the computer for a couple of weeks today. Check back later in March and maybe I can send you something.

'ow little is the lady?its a term thet been bandi’d about

lets get specific

weight height marital status* depth of technical surfing ability

,this girl deserves nothing but the best from these loved ones…

as spokesman for this conservatory of mynah birds,

let us take leave to do a bang up job so this girl will love us when we are old decrepit organisms…ambrose… on corn chips waiting for hot oatmeal rasin cookies in the oven

Lets see… She’s 5’7", about 140 or so, better than average swimming skills (swim team) but zero board balance skills…

More than anything, what I’m looking for are some basics, since I don’t know the first thing about prone riding (of waves). Examples: foil, center of flotation, rails, bottom contours, outline shapes… Length? Should the trailing edge be under her thighs, her hips, or her belly? What about rockers? Should I just copy a morey boogie? I know a lot of the versitility of a foamie comes from its flexibility… so, how do I get the performance, stability and maneuverability out of a rigid design?

I know there are some paipo gurus out there… Tell me some of the secret formulas, oh great ones!

And I did think long and hard about making a “real” surfboard out of it, but that’d be a lot of foiling… And I’ve been promising her a paipo for a while now, even though she doesn’t know that’s what they’re called. She thinks she’s getting a “fiberglass boogie board”.

Traditional paipo is 5/8" to 3/4" plywood, varnished waterproof, no fins, about 4’ long, wedge shaped wider in the back than the front, no rocker or kick. You drag your legs/fin for direction, and faster you go, the less need for dragging anything. NOT made for radical spray throwing roundhouse cutbacks, but they CAN.

Need little floatation because you duck easier without, and once planing, floatation is a hindrence.

Looks like you should be a spoon/hybrid, something cross between Greenoughs spoons, modern boogies, and traditional paipos.

Or just lay that blank on a rocker table, make a 5’ kneeboard.

up rails in nose

length of body board so hips dangle over tail

full thickness throughout

round rails

pretty fabric on deck in nose

no fin

favorite color to entertain the lassie

if rocker lacking cut in a new stringer

…ambrose…I made one for my girl friend in 1968,before the boogie she’s my wife now

Shwuzzalini,

www.surfresearch.com.au also has a paipo section you might enjoy perusing, as per usual !! [if you really MUST butcher a perfectly good aeroplane wing surfboard blank, that is ???]

amby …keep the dietary updates coming…LOVE 'em !

Idea 1 … Maybe you could do an "Amby 's Waterproof Cooking Tips For Surfers range of t-shirts ?

Idea 2 … An ‘insert’ for when your ukulele record gets released perhaps ?

Idea 3 … Iinstead of dried leaf and flower pressings, maybe your wife could start a dried spilt porridge scraped off the carpet collection ??

just some thoughts for you to ponder while you wait for the microwave to do its ‘ting!’ …

here’s ANOTHER one !

[THIS one will actually lead me to ACTION !! …shock ! … horror !! …] it’s nearly midnight here , so it’s time for me to hit the fartsack… gooood night , ever reee body !! ["…goodnight Dr. Nick !! "]

The two most important parts of being “beginner friendly”, in my opinion, are: #1 Having enough float so you can hang on while you think your drowning and be kept on the surface. #2 Being soft so you’re not scared of the board and can concentrate on catching/riding. That being said, I’d recommend a boogie board for her. Personally, the only time I bodyboard is in big close out barrels when I’m pretty much afraid to be in the mixer with a hard surfboard, which includes paipos. Not that she’ll be in those conditions but still, soft would probably help her confidence. I’d at least put a layer of closed cell foam over the top, I just scored some garage flooring from Kragen, it was only $10 for 4 2’x2’ peices, contact cement it on. I’ve been thinking about this a lot cause my girlfriend is being difficult about getting in the water. If you’re making a belly rider for yourself with the exscuse of “my girlfriend needs a board” then that’s a whole different story.

If you’re going to make a mistake on flotation, then I say err on the side of less flotation. She’s a strong swimmer, but…does she have a strong grip? Does she have wrist problems from work or riding a bike? Making the board less floaty will make it easier to dive under the soup. Especially if she’s got a weak grip and/or wrist issues. Center of flotation is important to people that want to arm paddle and kick at the same time. Since she’s a strong swimmer (strong legged) then I say don’t worry too much about having more float on the nose end. Likewise width isn’t that critical if the rider is willing to kick most of the time, and just use one arm for bursts of speed. Length is probably your most critical decision. It’s easier to take a gnarly drop with a shorter board. 42" might be the upper limit for her. You can always make it shorter by cutting the nose and putting on a nose block. Expect to need some deck padding to prevent deep chest bruising (boogie breast.) So that means fabric and/or artwork go on the bottom of the board. Copy a Morey Boogie? Would you shape a custom longboard that looked like a softie surfboard? Of course not. But nothing wrong with resembling a boogie board, like this custom Romanosky.

P.S. I recently bought my wife an extra thin sponge board. It has a soft top, slick plastic bottom, wood stringers for stiffness, and the thing is only 3/4 of an inch thick. She only weighs about 100 pounds, and she was fed up with bodyboards that are too floaty. The solution: her new bodyboard is really a softop skimboard from Area 51. Costs 1/5 the price of a custom sponge. http://www.area51skimboards.com/
