With the reneisance of the alaia boards lately do any of the master woodscraftsmen here have any experience with building the ancient Hawaiian papa holua land sleds? I remember some video footage some years back of Laird and Kalama riding them. Looking for some kind of instruction to building one. I may try to contact Tom Stone, who is the authority on this subject to take up some kind of appreticeship to build one.
bahaha
Worth it to see your name pop up Lee.
Don't Google it; Janklow it!
That's a good idea to contact Dr. Tom "Pohaku" Stone.... He has done his research and he knows the history behind those sleds. I just talked to him at the Battle of the Paddle at Waikiki in June. We go back a few years to our college days at WCC. I teasing him and told him he could use my Skil 100 to shape his alaia boards. He is very traditional and does everything with hand tools. He was even wearing a malo at the event. He is a super nice guy.
Aloha,

I think there's a PBS-like documentary on the subject featuring the Dr.
pretty nasty stuff doing the dance on the true stone pebble runs
I think the Doc says something like if you don't end up bleeding from either making or riding them then you aren't doing it right.
the gods want their sacrifice too
