Parabolic stringers

Just toughing out a possible stoke generating tread.

Anyone fooling around with wood or composite parabolic stringers?

Just brain storming, having built a few with factory “wood” stringers without earth shaking results.

Thinking of laminating some Techno 227 or XPS 138 into stringers and maybe trying parbolics again.

And no I can’t get them from the factory (small fry).

Mattwho, looking forward to seeing your new project. The stuff that you and Barry and others do with non standard glue-ups is inspiring.

Working on some new stuff.

Damn nice stuff Barry!

haven’t made one in a while but had good results on some eps core with xps rails and a bamboo veneer sandwiched between fiberglass for the ‘stringers’ between the eps and xps. really springy. wet out 4oz on both pieces of foam then throw the bamboo veneer in between and clamp. if you use wood stringers, make them thin (under 1/8") for desired effect!

they really like steep shorebreak type waves! my friends call this the ‘rubber-band’ board…

Nice finish on those rails and parabolics, Grasshopper.

Been thinking of going XPS rails and figure rails are a low risk for delam relative to deck. Any issues with delam on rails on your side?

My brother and I have been using XPS and wood for the rails, just like the image Grasshopper posted. The wood has been mostly 1/8" thick Balsa, but we’ve also used 1/8" thick ply with a 1" wide band of XPS. I’ve also done solid balsa, balsa and cork, cork, and just XPS around EPS for perimeter stringer rails. The wood rails are about a 1/2" to 3/4" and XPS foam is usually about 1" wide. I’m not really cerebral about the differences in how they feel in the water, I just ride um. I like my boards on the stiff side, so they are probably stiffer than what others like. XPS shapes really clean, so you can get really nice rails, plus it’s less likely to suck water if you ding the rail.

My brother likes to use Home Depot foam and it’s really light, like 1lb, maybe less. We have to add wood skins to give the shell some impact strength. 1/8" Balsa with 4oz glass under and over usually does the trick. Makes a super light board.
