In an older Surfer’s Journal Derek Hynd quotes Terry Fitz as saying that Parrish’s were “too easy to ride.” How did T.F.'s 70’s boards compare to Parrish’s (or Brewer’s) in terms of rocker, bottom contours, rails, etc… Maybe someone else who wasn’t there will want to know also. Thanks.
Drop me a line… Ill give you Derek
s email address.
I found Fitzy’s kind of stiff but very fast down the line. Lot’s of drive. Reno A’s were like that too. Parrish’s were real soft feeling. Many had more vee than I liked. Nice in the pocket though. I thought Turner’s and Angulo’s were similar. Brewers were somewhat in between those two. Real forgiving and smooth yet with a bit more drive than the Parrishs. I thought Barnsfield picked up where Parrish left off… at least until he pissed everyone off.
Thanks Greg you’re a legend.
Had the pleasure of working on a 8’0" pintail parrish about 5-6 years ago. Derek had brought it over in “blank” form, from hawaii. He was only in cal. for like 5 days on his way to the surf expo in florida, and needed the board rushed through quick. We did an opaque yellow top and bottom, and glassed an opaque red fin on it. That thing was freakin’ beautiful! What I would do to have that thing for 10 foot blacks!!! It seemed to have a bit lower entry rocker, with a nice amount thru the tail, and a sleek little beak nose. Just a super clean flow from nose to tail, and wide point just foward of center of course. Derek claimed it was a replica of boards he was getting way back when, and that it was one of the only ones parrish had done like it, in something like 20 years. Sanded and polished it,and squeaked him outta there with little time to spare for him to get his flight. That was fun! From the fitzy’s i’ve seen, they seemed to me, to be more like workhorses for serious tuberiding guys! Very awesome, but the parrish was like a rolls royce! When looking at it,there was no question in ones mind how that thing was gonna go, in a big clean wave. A picture came out about 6 months later of derek coming through a big section at J-bay on it!
STL, Are you talking about Derek Hynd? Sounds like the one he rode in the LITMUS video.
…Bet you can’t guess who’s got that board now.Herb
You got that thing herb!? You dog !Eh, hows the glassjob holdin’ up? Foamdust,I think it was the same one as the video.
…Seriously sounds like the one I sold a couple months ago to a collector friend…Not sure?..Can’t be that many?..If you did the glassing it held up great! Not too much damage, and the deck was fairly clean. …I owned it for a year or so…It was left in a buddie’s dingshop and never re-claimed so I bought it.I’ll see if I can grab some shots of it soon!Herb …ps.It rode like it looked, killer.Herb
What board was Larry Blair riding when he won the pipe masters two years in a row and almost a third in the heyday of Parrish,Brewer, and Fitz? A Geoff Mccoy. Never caught a rail and never spun out and rode deep.
