patagonia/point blanks

I bet the “black board” you refer to is a HydroEpic. Brewer/Plumeria already has a 6’2", 6’6" and a 7’8" hybrid coming out in this construction and we’re working on a 9’6" longboard and a 5’10" swallow (probably a tow in shape). I should be getting one of the 7’8"s soon, I think it will be the first one on the East Coast, and will post more info when it actually gets here. Exciting possibilities, the HydroEpic guys seem to be pretty versed on the tech aspects. For all you East and Gulf Coasters, I think we should have all the new Brewer/Plumeria HydroEpics at the Surf Expo in January. Stay tuned.

Sounds like the Hydro-Epic boards.

They run about $1000 for a 9 footer from our local surf shop - WISE surfboards.

If you thump them they make a funny sound.

They have a vent plug.

They are core-less - only a skin, carbon fiber over an aluminum honeycomb.

I saw one at Longboard House down in FL in August (before Hurricane Frances blew their roof off). The outer core sort of reminds me of the Fiberspar windsurf masts and booms I have hanging in my garage. Wasn’t Velzy one of the first ‘name brands’ to sign up with Surftech? If he is, in fact, going to have a Hydro-Epoch model, I think that it is another savy move on his part.

Benny1 - I justed checked Patagonia/PB’s site and the latest boards are built with eXtruded polystyrene - they apparently switched over from the ‘beer cooler’ expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam from earlier models - you must have an earlier production PB board.

Anyone know if the Patagonia’s are vented like the EpoxyPro XTR’s? Also someone asked over at SurferMag if HDX boards are similer to the XTR’s - both made with eXtruded (calling Jeff Wells or Hewitt). Thanks, John

Hi Johnxyz,

Their boards are not vented. They are shaped, laminated, etc. like poly boards but with closed cell EPS and epoxy…stronger, lighter, and more ding resistant.

No problem. You might want to confirm it with the store before you go ahead with the order–I overheard the same saleslady telling another dude that gloss coats increase the strength of a board by 50% and make it turn better, too.

Keep us posted!

YES! That has to be one of the raddest things I’ve ever heard! I’ll have to remember to pass that along! -Carl

my glassing. im having them make me a nose rider. most of their longboards come with a 6-6 deck and a 6-6 bottom, but the one stock noserider they have comes with a 6-6-6 deck wiht a 6-6 bottom. should i go with the tripple 6 deck or the double? how much will a 9’0 with tripple weigh compared to a 9’0 with double? anyone?

I doubt if the extra layer would add more than 4 oz. of weight. Go with it, it’ll still weigh about the same as a poly/poly board glassed with single 4 oz top & bottom, and much less (5-6 lb?) than a poly/poly longboard with 6+6+6 / 6+6 or with volan. And will be more durable than any of those…

i would not be afraid to go with the 6x6x6 glass job.my roomate shaped and brought home a shortboard with 3 or 4 layers of glass on it-absurd! but boy was i surprised when i picked it up-VERY lght and bulletproof.(yeah, it was a point blank board)

im tripple sixin .

GRUNION,

PointBlank’s website states that the new (current) boards are made with extruded foam (which is closed cell) - not EPS which I understand to be beaded, expanded beer-cooler type foam - like a Surftech.

Does anyone in the Swaylock’s community know the facts on the type of foam PB’s is using?

I’m reading it right off the board…closed cell EPS.

I've seen the blanks and they look very similar to poly not like the beaded style styro. The blanks absorb less water than poly as well. I spent some time testing and test riding before I laid out the bucks.

Do go with the “heavy” glass job it will still be by far the lightest longboard you’ve ever picked up. You are in for some real fun. Gil

grunion,

You may have a prev. gen. Pointblanks. Their site specifically states that they have switched to XPS from EPS foam (pls. see the Quick Links section on www.pointblanks.com).

I think some guys are confusing the terms, especially with the initial “E”, and johnxyz and grunion are actually talking about the same thing.

What grunion calls “closed cell” is “Extruded” foam, isn’t it? The same kind of stuff that Epoxysurfboards calls XTR (which is their trademark so Point Blanks can’t use that term).

In other words, Point Blanks uses the good stuff that does not soak up water, and is stronger.

They do not use the “Expanded” foam, the beer cooler type stuff that is more like a bunch of little beads (what some people call ‘beaded foam’.)

Or something like that…

Thanks Slim, I thought I was being clear but I assumed that it was understood E for extruded…we good John?

The board is pictured here and is state of their art…as of two months ago. In following Berts wider vs thicker thread I would go shorter and wider on the next time, maybe with a thruster bottom (I need to contact Bert B and see what it takes to get on his waiting list).

This one screams down the line which is what I wanted it for. Gil
