patch cut

when doing deck and tail patches…i have read that it must be an angle cut?? is this always the case? do they wrap with the rail, or cut on the deck? i’m talking for a tinted board

teddy-Rascoe generally cuts fin/deck patches with a “butterfly” cut. He cuts the patch so the top looks like a curved V.You can do it straight also.Or opposite of the V.Depends on the look you are going for.The patch on the deck should not lap under, but just on the top part of the rail. The fin patcch usually is just flat on the bottom with no lap-over.Saw that you were asking about the Outer Banks in"cut lap question". Everything is open, and the waves have been pretty good.Water is still pretty warm too. Our"surf" economy needs all the help it can get,so come on down.Good luck.TEDK.

It matters not what angle you cut the patches on. Or for that matter it doesn’t have to be an angle at all. But the classic style is to do a subtle Vee cut. Check the boards pictured here: http://www.huntcustoms.com/nd-006.html As far as wrapping the patches, you could if you want wrap both the deck and fin patches, but that will give you a a bump in the rails, so don’t do it. Just remember one thing, that is to do the patches the same time you laminate the board. Otherwise your just adding weight with no structural benefit. Drew

In the past I have put my deck patch on my shortboards all the way up to the start of nose foil (2/3 up)… but I always use stomp pads on my shortys. Seems there is no need for the extra protection in the tail. Anyone ever just put the stomp pad in the center where your front foot goes?

hey Ted…where are you located in the OBX? Rascoe does all the glassing?? hmmmm…
