Horrible subject line. Appologies in advance. I've got reclaimed fir from a gymnasium. Each stick is 1"x12" and the length varies. I do not have a lot, but I do have enough to dabble with my first shape. I've planed some with Mr. DeWalt and there appears to be good wood in there, certainly solid. The problem is every 3 feet or so there are two holes were bolts were used to secure the wood to beacher frames. My thoughts are to clean up the holes with a spade bit or the like and then fill before my initial glue up. My question is; What material should I fill-patch with given these patches could show up on the surface of the board? Thanks in advance for your input.
Surfiber, thank you. I certainly am all for rustic-charm and divots in the deck would not be a concern as long as it didn't feed into the chambers.....|~o The dowel idea is neat sine if the plug did show at the surface it's grain would be 90o to the rest of the grain. Will post once I get underway. Still in the delima as to free hand of rocker and outline templates or going to a CAD. I also have my 9'4" here from which I could create and template from formica or the like. Have a good one.
Cmbacot, go to woodcraft.com and get a 3/8" or the appropriate size countersink with pilot bit . Run the countersink in about 1/4" deep. With the countersink, get the matching size plug cutter (tapered) and you can use whatever you want. A contrasting color as in walnut might be nice, but if you want them to disappear (almost) use the same material with the same grain pattern. Epoxy in, trim down, and sand flush.
I wouldn't use putty. It will just look like a bunch of patched holes. I'm for leaving the holes alone, and show them as they are. Fill them up with some five minute epoxy, and sand them flush. They will go clear when you do the epoxy/fiberglass lamination. You may need to thicken the epoxy a little if the holes are too big.
OK guys I'm tracking with everyone except Sweid. Sweid are you saying fill before the initial glue up or fill just before fianl coating of the finished product with epox or some other sealant? Sorry, I'm a bit thick at times. Regardless, ya'll have a great weekend. Digitmisser

Leave the flaws...use the wood to build a nice Adirondack Chair or Porch Swing.....The scraps will make a nice tail block on your foam surfboard......The one you don't think you are going to build.................
