I like spackle because its easy. Apply it in layers, drying between > layers. Bruce, It’s sugar, and resin…or…fine foam dust and elmer’s Also you can go to Crystaliner in Newport/CosaMesa and buy foaming resin.Herb.
thanks guys, i’m gonna test both methods out. noodle i’m finishing up the 6’8" now, i ended up using the narrower numbers. i’ll try to post a pic when done.
I think there may be a foam patch resin (E32-2517 or E32-2522 Solarez micro-lite white) available from Fiberglass Supply listed under resources. Sun cure foam patching resin tinted to match Clark Foam no less… See link below to resin page of catalog. I haven’t tried it but it may do the trick. http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/Product_Catalog/Polyester_Resins/polyester_resins.html
Quick Patch spackle pre-mixed and ready to go. Wouldn’r use anything else. It is available at most hardware stores and do it your self stores. It sands so so easy with sand paper or dry wall screen. Dries quickly and can be paint too. Just rust me on this one uys. SD Steve
I’ve only seen you shaper guys use spackle. Personally, I’ve never ever dinged an unfinished blank myself so I couldn’t really say off hand…[smile]
they say women have better dexterity, must be true…

Personally, I’ve never ever > dinged an unfinished blank myself so I couldn’t really say off hand…[smile]**********i’ll go with that [wink] by the way, i’ve got this bridge… i use cabosil mixed with 1/4 q-cell(or micro ballons) and lam resin(suncure works). i closely tape off the flaw and use a razor blade to spread the mix then pull the tape immediately and smooth it out. if your doing a tint then you have problems.
If you have a dent and not a deep gouge use an iron.double a piece of 6 oz. and lightly rub with the iron (works better with a steam iron) use the front of thje iron so that you can control where you heat the blank. The foam will rise up and you just screan back to shape. This works great and Ive pulled out some large dings. Even if you have a large gouge use the iron first then fill

A while back I patched a ding on my blank. I mixed foam dust and resin. I figured it would look okay because I did an opaque glass job (light green). Unfortunately, you can tell where I did the patch (on the rail). It shows through the glass, even though it was an opaque job. Still not quite sure why this happened. I think next time I’ll either try the spackle or Herb’s sugar trick. I’m still baffled though. The patch turned out the same color as the foam. I sanded down flush. But the patch showed through (the foam right beside it did not show through)…Any comments on why??? Gene, you seemed to hint at this when you mentioned to be careful when patching foam prior to a tint job, right? Any advice? On a future board, I’m planning to do a brown/copper tint job, and in case I ding my blank, what’s your advice?
deeb, just keep it tight. don’t spread your filler around on the foam. that cabosil/qcell mix works really good. if you mix it right it has a nice neutral density. i use it if there’s any small air pockets in the surface of the shaped blank. i’m going to try a little sugar in the mix(for texture) next time and see how that works. the foam/resin mix doesn’t work too good, comes out too amber. remember blue or red tints will show anything you do regardless of the method you choose. just be careful and don’t ding your blank!

Again ,sugar and resin…clean, fine, foam dust and Elmer’s glue…,mix them on the dry, crumbly side, not wet!Wet the area in the ding first then apply the mix. The sugar/resin combo that Jim Phillips came up with is so far, the best I have ever worked with, all the way around. For big gouges I use casting foam… Herb.
Geez…Just dddon’t Dddding the board!

Your on…if not I’ll buy lunch.Herb.
yeH eneG, Can I come too?
