Paulownia on EPS - What glue to use?

Generally linseed oil comes in bolied and raw grades. Raw does not go off (harden) completely and will often stay tacky for years. Boiled (and more refined) linseed oil will harden off and is the basis for a number of paints and varnishes.

The trouble with it is that is can attract certain mould spores. They live off the oil and stain the surface. They do not cause rot but look horrible. I suspect there are many such spores in Thailand with the climate that you have. There are a number of other oils that would do the job perfectly well but ther do wear off and retouching is essential.

I think you are right to use epoxy and UV inhibitors but I wouldn’t thin it with acetone as that can often cause fish eyes as the acetone evaporates out through the curing epoxy.

Hi David -

Nice work indeed!  I hope the thinned epoxy followed by another coat does the job.

I remember on Compsand.com that a couple of really good builders were having issues with leaks.  MrJ had issues with one of his early boards that was vacuum bagged and fillcoated with an epoxy bog he had made with phenolic microballoon filler.

Just to be sure(?) Try the old ‘soapy water over the board in the hot sun’ trick.  Look for any bubbles as an indicator of leaks.  I would pay special attention around the rails where they attach to the foam.  It might be a good idea to do this test occasionally after you start surfing the board.

Hi John,

Thanks for your words and I’ll try the soapy trick on the next sunny day
