People with Futures Quad fin fish, please advise on fins

Just got my first fish, a 5’9 x 21 x 2.65 with a quad setup of futures fins. The canard quad fins from Rainbow are in the mail and probably won’t make it in time for the south swell. I’m looking for input on people with Manny’s or other quads and futures fins, so I’m not out experimenting instead of enjoying some nice Cojo. As crowded as it will be I won’t want to use up waves to dial in the fins.

Here are my fins to choose from:

Model | Height | Base | Area (sq in)

VF467 | 4 5/8 | 4 5/8 | 16.5

VF452 | 4 1/2 | 4 3/8 | 15.4

VF460 | 4 5/8 | 4 3/8 | 15.1

F4 | 4 3/8 | 4 3/8 | 14.2

FG1 | 4 | 4 | 11.5

I talked to Manny (great guy) and he said the canards work well in larger surf and to use single foiled thruster fins for beach break or smaller waves, with 4 3/4” fins in the front and 4” fins in the back. I bought the FG1 for the rear and have the other fins to use for the front. The VF are the Futures Vector fins with inside foils, although I think he meant no symmetrical foils when he said single foil fins and these have the concave inner foil. I’m just looking for input from what other people have tried in their Futures’ equipped Quad Fish. Thanks.

I just built my first quad. Here’s my question for you…since Future fin boxes differ (the side fins are deeper than the center fin box) what type of boxes do you have for the rear fins? I was thinking the same question myself about this board. I however used all side fin boxes which I think are going to limit my options. I was checking on the Rainbow Fins website and couldn’t find a quad setup there. Did I miss it or did you have to special order them??

Thanks.

467’s vector’s in front and 420 double foiled in the reaf on my Gemini

Custom Mandala fins from Rainbow for my Mandala double bump Futures Quad fish

Personally I like the 467 Vectors but I heard at extreme high speed they can be a problem…

In mine I got FTI up the front and FG 1 grommet fins in the back in my 6’2" quad. It’s quite loose but at hi speed, a decent sized wave or a tight turn it can get a little squirrely. (I’m a bit heavier/taller than average)

Getting the next size up set for the back for surf over 3’, but what I would be into is a set of proper canards for a bit more drive. Anybody know where to get these in Oz or who do I contact to get a set??

TIA

thats her in the photo!

I think you were right to put all side boxes in – that’s what I’ve seen in all of them, as the center box limits you to center fins (unless you grind down the base on side fins), with double foils and no cant built into the fins. As for the Futures Canard Quad fins, check this older page of Manny’s site when he used to use Futures and not Lokbox: http://www.mandalacustomshapes.com/futcanquad.html

The fins are not on the Rainbow site, but I emailed them and they said they just did a run of a few sets and they are $80 a set, and in clear only for now. Maybe they could ship to Oz, also.

I got some pics of the new board: http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=2120637382 In the pics I have the VF452 in front and the FG1’s in back. I think I will try this setup and maybe use the 467 or 460’s also to try and get the right feel and see the difference when the canards get here.

And now for the horrible surfboard pun of the day: “I cant wait to try the fins”
