HIGH PERFORMANCE! ME ME ME
Hello Greg,
can you tell me how much rocker you put into the nose and tail of the pictured board?
3 3/8 " tail
5" nose
Thanks Greg. I had 5" in the nose and 3 5/8" in the tail in mind for my next LB. Guess I wasn’t too far out…
Hey Greg…
Roger wants one…I do to, I’m in the EPS waiting zone…LOL
John S from Austin might be contacting you soon.
Hey Greg,
That series of longboards looks like you are running a designed experiment with the channel configuration. Is that a fluke? If not, what did you learn?
I have made those for 20 years.
3 time World Champion Rusty Kealauna rode a 5-fin Nose Channel board in the mid 90’s i made.
Not a normal board.
All these boards are lots of fun to ride and make your surfing exsperience that much more interesting.
This is what we all look for.
FELLOWSHIP OF FUN!
"FELLOWSHIP OF FUN!
starting your own religion up there?
makes sense…
at least it’ll be real (FUN)
you should see what the other’s pull in to the top of the pyramid…
you could retire once you franchise…

A great starting point. What do you want out of the high performance LB? I’d go with some of the shortboard bottom contours. Im my opinion, concave in the nose detracts from performance, delaying turns because the nose wants to stay on the water. So go with a little bit of roll in the nose. Flat thru the middle with perhaps 3mm of concave. A little bit of roll at the rail from the nose to 2/3 length helps stabilize things. For the tail, flat V panels, with the max V under the back foot, i.e. where the side fins go. This blends to flat at the tip of the tail. Like others said above, lose the 50/50 rails, they are great for trimming but not so much for turning. Use a good shortboard for your rail ideas. This is a HPLB, so you want to go light on the glass. Two layers of 4oz on the deck and one layer of 4oz on the bottom, sanded finish. I like my side fins at 15.25 and 1.25 in from the rail and 4.25" tall. The rear fin is 7.5" high and I ride it at 6" from the tail. The rear finbox gets marked at 4". I guess we need the width dimensions also, 17x22x14.25. Something like this will possibly allow you to emulate the moves in the above pictures.
My longboards have a multiple plane bottom that is 40 years old and you could not want for more.
Its great to be 60!
Greg
…in Brazil in the 90 s that design risen all type of crap boards/shapers/machined designed that was a pain in the arse for every one involved
Kelly brought one of the boards that Kech had shaped him to Channin, Balsa Bill was steering Kelly to have his and Seans boards done at Channin.
I think that Kelly Kechele board might still be stashed somewhere upstairs at Channin glass shop. I remember seeing it not too long before I quit working there. Hopefully they haven’t tossed it. It would be a nice contribution to SHF.
love the greg griffin longboards!
Greg, Those are some beautiful looking long boards. I would love to take any of those out for a spin. I do have a question. On the slot nose boards, is the rocker the same in the center as it is on the rail line?
Huck thanks!
Great tread!
I could not agree more, GG’s stuff is so tuff!
The green short board reminds me of a quiver I once had and humm I doubt it but some of those GK’s did get ridden at Sunset!
Those LB outlines are hot!!!
Can’t copy cuz I’m already there.
Funny 2 me…
Some thoughts on a High Performance long board. One of my thoughts was on making a board that would perform better for beach break waves. First I would have pig style template a touch more rocker off the tail behind the fins. Slightly flatter center rocker and more curved rocker on the rail. I think this is what Griffin is doing with his slot nose boards. Step deck to reduce some swing weight. As far as the fin set up, on that I am not sure. The one quad long board I rode, The McTavish F4 was not working for me. Might go with a 2/1 set up or since I’m a fan of Bonzers so might do a Bonzer set up. The Board would be more for turning and staying close to the pocket than noserider style board.
Not trying to be an ass.
Started out a few years ago trying to resurect the Yater spoon shape with modern mods.
Worked well however not all it could be.
Shifted to something i rode myself (just tired of failing to get what I wanted) so the "old gives way to the new’…
Matwho, Are you saying forget the step nose? or am I missen sompin? Board on the right looks like it might be close what I was talking about Not sure if it is the camra angle. But it looks like wide point back from center with hips. If you have more photos Please feel free to post them. Both Boards Like great. How do you like the quad set up?
Lose the step deck ?
Hell no not on a spoon!
Rep’d the wedge stringer to get the flex like the origional bender.
Had 4 all with dbl concaves of different depths.
The boards are/were ridden by my Son. Rode the wedge for 2 years loved it. Mine is 10-6 HA! I call it the “Mega spoon”.
I have no complants it’s a guilder and quite fast So if your a classic or a glider the spoon is a great ride.
you have a good eye 3" behind center, yeap! You a Velzy guy too?
The new board (quad) rocks the first report was hard to believe.
“Boy” got in some overhead waves today on it called in and all very positive.
So lose the “hips” is change up to what GG was doing 8 years ago.
