does anyone know or remember what style of board Phil Edwards used to ride? things like bottom contour or rails??who made his boards?
doesn’t hobie currently make a “phil edwards” model?
im pretty sure he shaped his own. if you get the new surfer or surfing it has a picture of him shaping, present time.

phil edwards doesn’t shape nowadays due to a shoulder injury, and while hobie doesn’t currently have a Phil Edwards model listed on their site, here’s a pic of the classic:
I find it interesting that in spite of Phil Edwards having been the leading designer of many Hobie products, including his own signature model surfboard, there is no mention of him on their website.
I’m not taking away from their present shaping team but NO MENTION OF PHIL EDWARDS on Hobie website?!
straight rocker, hull, straight square tail neutral rails-he has it down!
I believe Baby is still on display in O-Side.
I believe Hobie markets a board to Japan called the “Legend” that is based on the old Phil Edwards Model and shaped by T. Martin.
Board can be seen here:

Interestingly, they also have an “Endless Summer Special” model, some of which are shaped by Hynson himself…
There was a Phil Edwards-shaped 19’6 in High Tide SS in Petaluma for years. Might still be there. Last price I saw on it was around $2500.
Its about as neutral as you can get - 50/50 rails pinched a little at the tail, nose not pulled in or fattened out, no concaves, vees, chines, flat sweet spots, or pronounced belly in the hull, tail probably in the 14" range, nose about 17.5-18", wide point right about amidships looked to be about 23", thickness for the 9’6" around 3 1/4 to 3 3/8…just a very smooth, symmetrical, flawless piece of classic foam & glass…
I have a 1965 single-owner (me), 10’ 2" (37#!), three-stringer, Phil Edwards “square-tail gun” that I used to ride in the mid-60’s at Blacks (often borrowed and ridden there by R. Grigg as well) that I would be willing to take measurements from if anyone is interested in building something similar and needs them.
A square tail gun? Yes, please!! Pictures and/or specs would be great.
many thanks,
any one have the basic dimensions for Baby?
Has anyone heard of a Phil Edwards Hobie 10’ 5 stringer with a glassed
in single fine offset to the right of center line?
