photo archives

How do I post pics of my boards on the photo archive when my photos have over 400kb and the max for the archive is 90kb? Is it possible? They are on a cd-rom.

Hi Mike, It’s very possible. You took the pics with a regular film camera and had the film developing people do you up a CD, right? First, use the link below to download Irfanview, which you can use to resize and resample the pics to a smaller size. It’s a freebie, and works well with a whole lot of different graphics formats. Open the photo on CD using Irfanview. Having done that, select Resize/Resample from the Image menu. Select a new size - I’d recommend no more than a width of 800 pixels, though 640 works even better on smaller/older screens.Click on Ok. Shazam, it’s resized. Not done yet - go to the Image menu again, up top is Properties. Look at Disk Size- see if it’s under the 90KB limit. If it is, good, if not you can either shrink it some more or decrease color depth, both on the Images menu. Save As a jpg/jpeg to your hard disk, and jot down the name. Repeat with whatever other pics you want to send. Hope that’s of use doc… http://www.irfanview.com/

Thanks doc and John. I’m working on it. John, your new fish for the friend looked killer.

John or doc, O.k. I have my pictures under 90kb. It cann’t send it because of file name Quandries. I try to follow the instructions. Any suggestions? man, I could of shaped another board by now. You think anyone really wants to see my boards?

uhm, dunno exactly, but… Try renaming the image files as qdries1.jpg through qdriesX.jpg where X is the number of the last one, all lower case and no spaces, etc. Has to be less than 8 letter/number characters in the filename, you see, unlike Quandries.jpg which is 9 letters, with no spaces or control-type characters such as $ or @ or % . And some image editors will make xyz.jpg into xyz.JPG or Xyz.Jpg or something like that which can make life a pain. You don’t wanna know about the fun I haven’t had with blown image links 'cos of that. Oh, and make sure it’s a jpg or gif image, not another format. Just 'cos that can happen too. That should see you through. If not, there’s more info in the fine print on the ‘add-a-photo’ page. hope that’s of use

Bring out the GIMP! http://www.gimp.org/

pulp fiction? i don’t get it…

Ah- you see, with The Gimp you CAN make Marsellus Wallace look like a beeyotch. Though it’s a whole lot easier on Linux boxes… http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110912/quotes

I scan most of the photos I upload to swaylocks. Once converted to jpeg, they still have a file name about 1 foot long.To get around this I save them to a floppy disc and rename them with a less than 8 letter name. Then I load them from the floppy.Hope all of this makes sence.David.

I noticed I put the Linux link up, oops, here is the Windows Version. http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/

lacking the ambition to set up the whole GTK thang for Windows… I said bag it and went with a 9 upgrade of Red Hat for the Linux box.

Wish I had that option here at work! Its not that hard though to get running on windows, they make it sound alot more painful than it is.

it can’t be a whole lot more painful than an install or upgrade of linux… but I have some time to kill. Red hat is less painful thaN most, buty it’s still a royal pain.

GIMP rocks! When it doesn’t crash that is… regards, Håvard

Hey, Havard; Yeah, once I got the blasted install to run - around attempt 23- …oh well, I wasn’t doing anything today anyhow…

David I think your suggestion did the trick. Swaylock’s accepted them. They are not in the archives, yet. Thanks all. Mike

Mike, it usually takes about a week for the photos to be processed at the Swaylocks end. I think it depends on how busy they are. You will get an e-mail letting you now when they are up.David.
