Pick A Pigment...

Hey Swaylockers,

Wondering if any of you have any pigment you’re willing to sell. I’m looking for 1/5 oz pigment of blue, red, and white. Thanks

you can order whatever you need online from Surf Source in florida…shipping is pretty cheap, i think.

Should I contact them about pigment, or is it on their website?

it’s all on the website. once you go in, click “Surfboard Manufacturing” and then “Resin and Accessories”…all the different colored tints are in there – $6.95 for a 2-oz. bottle. if you wanted to make it opaque, you would need to add some white pigment to it. white pigment is listed under “Additional Materials” and costs $6.12 for an 8-oz. bottle.

Just go to your local art supply store.

Here in BerkelelyCA, there are at least 6 of 'em that carry both tints and pigments.

foamez and fiberglass suplly sells resin tint at pretty good prices.

why is it that red and yellow tint are more expensive. is it because of the minerals or whatever makes up resin costs more.

red and yellow are in the greatest demand…the only reason they cost more is because people want them more.

i guess i put to much thought into why they where more expensive

I just did an experiment with pastels, (not the oil kind) where i ground them up really fine and pigmented resin with them.

worked out pretty well, you get the exact color you need straight from a bar. One thing though, is i would strain the resin.

no matter how fine you grind them, larger specs tend to appear in the resin. I think i will give it one more go with some medium mesh paint strainers and then move on to liquid pigments.

As long as I’ve known pigments have cost different prices. This is despite any particular demand for a colour…

as far as i know, there is no magic techinque to making blue pigment that differs from making yellow pigment…especially given streamlined modern manufacturing methods. yellow is a highly recommended color for beginners because it won’t show as many mistakes…and the experienced glassers like it, too. red follows because it’s a likely addition for an acid splash or swirl over a yellow base coat. all the local suppliers i’ve used seem to run out of yellow before anything else… when demand is constant and supply is fixed, the only remaining factor that fluctuates to even the S/D curve is price.

Is there a substance you can use other than pigment? Watercolors, paint, etc?

i think that liquitex acryllic paint can be mixed with resin…but why not just get pigment…pigment works…if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Do you have to use fully waterproof pigment?

i use pigment from surfboard manufacturing suppliers, designed specifically for use with polyester and epoxy resins in manufacturing surfboards…and i wouldn’t use anything else. as for what you CAN get by with?..i’m not sure. but pigment is hardly a major expense, so why cut corners?? the risk of compromising the integrity or finish of your board isn’t worth saving $5.

Hopefully, no. Thing is, if the pigment has to be waterproof, you’ve gt problems, no?

hope that’s of use
