Got a bug up my butt about building some kind of “fish”.
Objectives;
NOT so wide
Volume and function
Enhance glide on flats
See photo, got this blank Friday and started template using an old McCoy template. Having ridden many pig templates, moved the wide point back (of center) 3” for s&g’s and got stuck on tail width. So I put it away, ya know the gears are still grinding…
Started thinking of wing placements in relation to fins, oh this’ll be a Quad. And from what I see generally wings are at the rear of the fins.
I Like what I see so far. I always liked a soft wing break before the fins a Little like a sting and a wing combo. Easy on The salsa and extra guacamole Any Plans for some bottom concaves or other assorted magic tricks?
Kinda like my salsa and guaq spicy but I promise to be good! Been thinkin’ flat to vee, although a single to double concave is rolling around right now. The rocker and wetted surface is to be considered… Thanks.
Yeah buddy, McKee is a good start got some quads wet and like everyone we move stuff around. Moved fins up a 1/2" from normal on this board. Really was asking about the wings being at the front or rear of the fins.
Wow, 1/2" is a big move. Wings usually break on the trailing edge of the fin. Hopefully that 1/2" move pays off. Look forward to seeing more pics along the way of the shape, glass etc…
Seein' that this is goona be a mush buster, the thought of loosening up things to get from section to section, the pump is paramount. Thanks for the input! Just came in to see, if anyone chimed in, you see I gotta get the production first before I get fun time, finally got to the template and starting from the tail I’ve placed the wings @ the rear of the fins. The guys@ Fiberglass Hawaii (Ventura) take very good care of me, (Steve, Wade, and Louie) of which the parabolic’s and the Frye blanks came from We are truly blessed to have you guys out here!!! Thanks again for your input
I started a thread about wing placement a while back. What I ended up with from the thread , was to run the line of tow-in through to the rail directly behind the fin. This gives the centre for the wing position on the rail…it's basically an exit point for turbulance coming off the trailing edge…and it seems to work quite efficiently…my trailing edges were plotted 1" to 1 1/2" from the rail , on a basic Mkee set-up…whatever you end up with , post the results if you can…it's quite an interesting subject.
The great thing I have learned over the years is, double wings are a great way to bring in a wide tail quickly without making an abrupt ugly change in the tail curve.
At the start I was throwing out my thoughts of flat to vee or single to double concaves, Artz likes the concaves and I agree.
Looking thru the other posts, "Low entry rocker" and came across this "1" entry would work fine. You could even get away with 15/16" or 7/8" on a 5'7". It will paddle fast, catch waves easy, and fly down the line. I would suggest that .25 inch of concave is too deep, try .125 or no deeper than .1875. A little "vee" behind the fin cluster will help relieve the sticky-ness of the flatter front rocker."
I'm thinking flat faced to shore pound waves, what depth and where, would you do. My belief is the musher' the less, although I haven't shaped a slight concave and the last 2 performance (5'-9') where Marurice Cole singles and really have no idea of what will help with generating speed. Thanks for you help…
