black might be different, but you put the pigment in the laminating resin.
The sanding resin on clear as per usual. However its wirth noting black might be different then other colors. Theres a guy on here who made a mostly black board. Gene is his username i believe.
hope this helps.
Angus-
Lots of pigment in the lam…
Dark colors done right look awesome…Black is not a good color for a surfboard. Too much heat…go for it …keep the board covered and out of the sun
I have seen it done in the lam and in both the lam and hot coat. The lam and hot coat one looked better- more steath fighter lookin. I have some pigment that starts off black and turns white & one that turns orange over 80F.
If you want to see the weave then just in the lam. Always test with glass on a piece of foam for opacity, you don’t want to see through it and you don’t want to overload it.
In both the lam and the hotcoat for a totally even blackout.
Never in the hotcoat only unless you want that uneven trendy carefree lazy hipster look.

From the master right there…
If you want a really deep, dark, black.
Put it in both.
Mix enough for both hotcoats at one time and split it.
That way both are the same color.
Black reqires a lot of pigment.
Weakens the resin.
Use cobalt (sparingly) the get resin good and hard. Put in lam only.
hey gene do you do a pigmented gloss too or just a clear ?
Awesome advice… Let’s get on it!!!
Bought a black foam blank. I have not shaped it yet. The foam is not 100% black… more like a really really dark grey. So almost black.
Will glass it with black pigment. Starting with the base all black prior to lam should add to the density of the color.
You could also do a resign tint stain on the foam to get the black base to start from. Or you could airbrush it black as well and then tinto with black lam.
