pin lines on foam

any hints on getting nice pin lines on the foam? i have posca pens and masking tape. is spraying easier?

Using masking tape will get you a crisper edge. Shoot the paint and do not thin it too much. I shoot the paint as thick as the little gun can handle and it still typically requires 2 or 3 coats. HTH.

I use posca pens, and they work great. dont push too hard, and use the big pens so that some of the tip rides on the masking tape. spraying works great too, but with the pens you dont have to do all masking of the blank to protect it from overspray. the new sharpie waterbased pens are cheaper than the poscas and seem to have more ink in them.

this is a really stupid question but are u supposed to airbrush onto the first layer of fiberglass or right on the blank. Also would painting with acrylic paint on the blank cause problems when glassing?

if i had understood what you ask for : yes ! no worry to use acrylic paint on the blank…nothing strange will happen during the glass…look a t the attachment !

for the posca use, the last i’ve done was on the sanding coat…

Pinlines are supposed to cover up messy laps lines when doing cut-laps.

Other than that they serve no purpose other than cosmetic.

Usually do it on the hotcaot and not on the foam. But you could do it on the foam is you wanted.

Acrylic paint should not affect glassing if it is layed on in thin coats.

Well that’s how pins were used back in the day, but since the 1960s there’s a lot more decoration, and most importantly, silane finished glass is available so now clear glass jobs and freelappign mean that you don’t need pins anymore.

Acrylic pins can be done on the hotcoat, resin pins always are. Acrylic spray work including pins can be done on the foam, resin pins never are. Resin pins, as noted above, have cleaner edges. How? Search the archives, but the short version is Scotch 233 and a thin seal of lam resin. Resin pins tend to have better color saturation.

Nice clean resin pins are an art, I’m still working on 'em.
