I’ve heard people say that airbrushes are a good way to get an even coat when painting pinlines, but I don’t want to invest in an airbrush for the few pinlines I’m going to paint.
Has anyone here used canned spray paint to paint pinlines? With how much sucess? Most importantly, what brand?
Thanks guys, this board is such a fantastic resource and inspiration.
You can get a cheap airbrush at harborfrieght for like 14 bucks. Unless you have an air compressor you would also have to purchase the “canned” air. Another 6 bucks. If you only use it to do pin lines it should last you through quite a few boards. The airbrush won’t be good for fine work but great fades and tape offs. I still use my cheap air brush for fades because it is easier to clean then my detailing airbrush.
You can use spray paint.I have had good luck with the Acrylic Lacquers that you get from the Auto Parts Store. The brand I have been using is called “Plasticote” and its sold as touch up paint.I mainly use black. You can buy many colors including clear. The main problem is that it is very thin and you have to mist on a few coats to get coverage. If you go too wet the tape can bleed.I also shoot a clear coat of the same lacquer over the pin before pulling the tape.If you are going to gloss over a pin done on the hotcoat you need to lightly scuff it with a scotchbrite pad to dull it down.I did a whole panel in Metallic Red and it came out nice.Bear in mind that Acrylic comes in two forms…water based and solvent based. The lacquer is solvent based and dries super fast.
