hey, im working on my second board. it’s a 5’10, 15"nose, 21"wide, 13.5"tail, and 2.75" thick. its also a singlefin. i glassed it in 7.5oz volan cloth, seafoam green on bottom (using pigment), clear on top. i have a 2 inch lapline where the seafoam green meets the clear deck. i did it by taping it off and then cutting on the tape line, so, naturally, it’s not perfect. therefore i want to put a pinline on the lapline with dark green pigmented resin. how should i go about doing that? should i just tape it all off and cut a 1/8 line and just paint it on? also… should i put styrene hardener in the resin i use to pinline it? and one more question… i made the fin for it, 30 layers of cloth, 1.5 quarts of resin, etc. cut it out, sanded it, blah blah blah… any idea where i should place it? (i also have a vee on the bottom). i was thinking about 6 inches up from the tail. thanks for your help.
steve, both sufsource.net and auto paint and body supply stores sell pin-lining tape. i used it with good results. when you look at the different widths available, you should have an idea of just how much your imperfections vary (in fractions of an inch) from a perfect flowing curve. since i was far from expert in cut laps, i ended up buying a double pinline tape (1/8 and 1/16 separated by 1/16), and removing the separator strip in the middle. this gave me a 1/4" pin-line to hide my flaws under. as you lay this tape down, it is clear in the middle. try to center your lap cut line (as much as possible that is), while at the same time keeping the tape going on a flowing curve. incidentally, i used an acrylic black Posca pen to paint the line on, and i think they probably make a dk green. that’s if you want to go that route. good luck.
