Pipeline on a 10'6" Solid Balsa and Redwood Phillips

Thought you’d all enjoy this shot of Aamion Goodwin riding a 10’6" Jim Phillips solid balsa and redwood board weighing in around 60 lbs. This is what the guys (Wally Froiseth, George Downing, Fran Heath, & John Kelley) would’ve cut their hotcurls down in the early 40’s for big wave boards in the islands. It has a redwood and sugar pine fin with 11" base, 5.5" height which fits into a sliding dovetail finbox inspired by the early removable finboxes of George Downing.

Scott Aichner’s shot of Aamon Goodwin has really created a compelling image as two elements, classic board in contemporary setting, come together.

Jim built a half dozen (plus) boards that have been surfed here in CA and in HI for a movie coming out someday documenting the evolution of the surfboard and history of surfing.

Bitchin!

and very good idea about the boards evolution
