Have you ever done a gloss coat? It has athe thickness of a coat of paint. There is no “under” a gloss coat. I’m sure if you put rice paper in your gloss coat it will show/stand high/be textured.
No, I have never done a gloss coat. Thanks for the heads up.
I’ve seen it done with really thin rice paper (the stuff that looks like ass gasket paper) under a hot coat. But, if it’s not absolutely down flat, you will most likely burn into it when sanding the hotcoat. Better to be on the safe side and patch over it with 2 oz. As far as under the gloss – That’s not going to work at all.
Hi Hawk
When I’m doing decals over tints I always lay them down on top of the laminate - pre hotcoat then lay 2 patches of 4oz cloth over the top of the lam using regular lam resin. The first patch has a considerable overlap of the decal the top patch sits inside by an inch or so, so it makes feathering it out cleaner and results in no ridge. Then I hotcoat the lot as usual and sand. Gloss coat applied over the sanded board as usual. I’ve never tried it but I think you are destined for disaster if there is no glass over your decal. If you’ve already hotcoated you could just scuff up the area with 80 grit and lay your decals and patches over the top as described above.
cheers
Rich
Thirdshade,
Good thinking with the two patches to make feathering easier. The board is opaque so I’ve been kicking around how to best handle this logo situation.
It is already hot coated, so I am going to give the logo area a little extra sanding and then give the logo it’s own mini lam… then gloss coat the whole thing.
Thanks all for the help!

Lay down the lam, and put a layer of 4oz over, and when it gets to “B stage” pull off the 4oz. The patch will add enough pressure to make everything flat, and there will be no discoloration when its removed. Comes out even better if its done with peel-ply.
evrybody does it different, whats with all the layers of glass to hold down the rice paper by the time you get done with this process you are likely to have a "pitchers mound" on top/bottom of your board or mabey get a piece of plywood and a refridgerator on top, mabey that will work.if you try to put the rice paper down "dry" its going to bubble, but if you soak the rice paper in resin first and stick it on the blank, then its covered , no layering no feathering in its done.
Yea, I kinda thought the same thing after I slept on it for a while. So I just wetted up a spot on the deck and carefully placed it. Maybe 30 minutes later I went and did the whole gloss coat. Turned out pretty good. No bubbles, no bump… not a big deal really.
Anyway, board #1 is done now. I’ll post some pictures.
