planer barrel alternative

Anyone tried these replacement blades for the hitachi that have an abrasive instead of the blade edge ? Looks like the abrasive is similar to the barrel.

I saw them on the foam-ez site.

If yes, please give a report on the performance. Thanks !

They look good.

I still have a problem with blades that cost 3x the price of the planer.

But that’s just me.

Your not alone man,I would be surprised if these blades cost even 1/4 of that to manufacture.

Those blades will shape the board all by themselves, for you. All you have to do is hold the tool … By the way, what is a Hitachi … … Have Fun …!

These are one result of the problems that came with fully studded grit drums. These got hot, sucked the planer into the board, and taxed the planer motor. Also, the cost is much less than producing a full drum with the shaft and all. The new full-drum designs have the abrasive in a scroll pattern which works better. Opinions vary on the abrasive blades, production guys say they’re too slow, low-volume builders say they’re too expensive to buy so there’s not much input there. The production guys would rather use blades and pay more for eps that cuts cleanly.

Pete,

Thanks for the feedback. Was hoping others would comment as well.
