I have been working with my planer for a while now and it is making a really bad noise. I have the Hitachi P20SBK and its previous life was used by a carpenter. The noise I am getting is a metal raking sound. Kinda like the fan blade is scraping. I have taken it apart and cleaned everything and it gets better, but still has the noise. I do have chips on my brushes, so I ordered new ones. I was wondering if the bearings are shot? I am half tempted to just get a new planer ($100 for the same one from Sears Online), but I want to see if I can fix this one first. Any suggestions? When I spin the bearings they seem smooth and without noise. Planer guru’s please help.
Take it apart again, see what the seats look like. If they've been overheated by bad bearings they'll be deformed. You might be able to get new bearings in, but they'll get trashed quickly because things aren't lining up correctly.
You may have unknowingly purchased a used tool that was already cooked. If you start fresh on a new one, run the best bearings you can get and change them at first sign of wear (any noise, vibration, or ''stickiness'' in rpm).
When I took it apart, I looked to see fi there was any mealting going on and it didn’t look like it. When I get the next one, I can really tear down this one to find out everything. thanks for the help.
I hope the one I ordered is new, but we’ll see. If it is jacked I’ll just return it. For $107 shipped, I don’t figure I can go wrong especially if I can return it. I tear it apart to check first tho. Where can I get really good bearings for these? do you know?
You should replace the stock bearings in the new one too. It's a standard size bearing, lots of choices out there. My repair guy (who is also a Milwaukee sevice center) puts Milwaukee bearings in mine.
Take the bearings with you to a bearing Centre. They will give you options of quality. Can even take off the seals and use a better quality grease iside before replacing the seals
You can also check out www.erplacementparts.com. They have parts for most tools and all kinds of bearings. Make sure you replace with sealed bearings. This sounds like what Mike D. is talking about. One reason for the brushes to get chipped is the armature is not concentric or out of line.
