I am gathering tools to shape my first board and was wondering… Is is better to get the modified Hitachi from foamez.com or buy a “better name” (i.e Bosch) from my local hardware outlet? Do the modifications make a huge difference?

Do the modifications > make a huge difference? I bought a cheaper planer when I first started, and ended up getting the modified Hitachi. Stock planers cant take as deep a cut as the modified, and sometimes you may have to adjust the depth of the cut while taking a pass, which is rather difficult with a stock planer adjustment knob. I think in the long run you would eventually get a modified Hitachi no matter what you start out with, so you might as well start of with the Hitachi.

Do you plan on shaping more than one board? If so get the Hitachi, also buy good block planes (Stanley,Record etc.).If you decide to get a cheaper planer I would buy one of the $29.00 models from Harbor freight or Grizzly.A Bosch will run you around $100.00 for the cheap one.For that kind of money you can get a planer and a disc grinder from Harbor Freight.
Thanks for the advice everyone! Looks like I’ll be ordering the mod’ed Hitachi. Are there any other tools/devices that you absolutely swear by for shaping?>>> Do you plan on shaping more than one board? Jen: Get a good set of whet stones or a reliable sharpening system for your tools and learn how to use them. You’ll need a handsaw or some way to cut out your planshapes and an etched aluminum 12" square comes in handy.
