Planer Research Thread

My 676’s tag…Right side up no serial number

Gene, are you interested in rare 220 V european versions of the Skil 100? I own two of them, in case you want close-up photos or something. Not the plastic handle version, I mean the real thing.

Yeah Balsa, post photos and any history you know of.

I have model 100 type 4 with a green badge. Has anyone seen this before?
It spent some years in the bottom of a knack box and chewed on some 16d’s. There was also foam dust in the motor when I replaced the bearings. Someone have a good source for a new belt and blades?
These pics show just how much abuse these planers can take.

Belts and blades and some parts including belt gaurds, AH at a cost ( the belts are spendy).

Goodrich 84

Wonder if that badge was red and faded to green after lots of UV exposure?  Anybody ever seen green like that on a late 70’s Skil?

That’s a trip. I’ve never seen a green serial# plaque before.

Some times you can find belts on eBay. You can also buy them here.

For blades, Go to this website, find there phone# and call them. They don’t have them on the website but you can get them if you call.

The green is very uniform and the black is also. I think red might fade to pink, mauve, or brown.
What was the last year produced?

I was hoping to do better than Ebay for parts.

Thanks for the links wavecraft, i missed your post.

I liked the old Sways better; when all new posts went to the end of the thread.

    Amen!

How come the Chinese rip off guys haven’t copied the Skil 100 and given us  a $75 disposable version?  Where are they when we really need them?  Ha

You would think but it’s possible that different lots of paint might fade differently.  If someone had a photo of a fresh planer with green it would disprove the fade theory.

I believe the last 100’s were sold around '82 but i’m looking for documentation to support or disprove.  The last ones were type5 like the one that Tim P. has for sale on swaybay.

I know PeteC has a source for new HSS blades. $45 a set

Greg,

I’ve pondered the same question, for years.      It wouldn’t have to be disposable either.      They could make an excellent copy that would be very profitable at under $100 dollars wholesale, and $200 to $250 dollars retail.      Even though I’ve got two Skil 100’s, I’d buy a bolt for bolt Chinese copy, in a heartbeat.  However, if it were done with plastic and stamped metal, I wouldn’t go near it.

Bill

Therein lies the problem. That is all that comes out of China.

No one goes to china for quality. They go there to make a cheapest version of there product that people will still buy.

Ryobi actually produced this L22LN in the '70s. It was almost a copycat but, unfortunately, the depth of cut device was very different (like the Hitachi). I still shaped dozens of boards with this one and I still have it in my collection.

hey, its not my listing and I don’t care, but somebody has a nice old Mall planer for sale on ebay…buy it now for $159, comes with a case (and new cord, obviously)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mall-Plane-Poormans-Skill-100-Take-A-look-/221398568099?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338c620ca3

That Mall is in great shape, made in 1956 or after with the Remington badge.  The guy didn’t have any takers at $200 and re-listed.  I’ve got an earlier one so I’m not biting unless the price drops again.  Somebody here should grab it because they’re suprisingly nice tools, just clean up the chain area so it has a minimum of oil, check the seal and go…  Girlie men need not apply.

gene, do you know anything about the old makita 1600 model planers?

theres one on Aus ebay i am considering

I don’t know much about that Makita…

except you can still get one new, minimum order is 100pcs.  And the company can supply you with 50,000 units a month.
