Planers porn

Sub-title: “How to make Doc’s resolutions for 2010 obsolete”.

Here are a few shots of my collection, for Doc and others interested, apologies if it’s not that much surfboards-related… Of course, this is the place to post YOUR planers photos, too…

So, Doc, here’s the Stanley that I talked about in the other post:

Now, here is another view of the Mafell which shows this incredible dust-chute even better:

The Holzher (chain-drive):

The small Harry (the guy who sold it to me said it was a “cabinet-maker planer”… I never heard of that before…) That thing has a very dangerous on/off button at the top of the handle, you never know whether it’s on or off, better to keep the tool away from everything when plugging it in…

The Elu, basic carpenter planer.

An european version of the Skil100:

And, of course, the Rockwell and the Skil:

Currently working on cleaning/polishing all those. And looking for others…

A few more from Monsieur Balsa’s collection…

and one of Our Man In France, in action…

How are you guys getting by without a Wen 930?

Thanks for that, Gene, although I had already seen it (on your site?) together with this Mall, I think?

BTW, John Mellor told me that the Rockwell pictured above (that he very generously gave to me) once belonged to you. Can you confirm?

Balsa,

Gotta love that Stanley - basicall a router laid sideways with a spiral bit and plate tacked on.

Though maybe good for cleaning up outlines (as it was obviously built as a door /edge planer), even then it looks awkward with all that weight hanging off the side.

Does it see much use?

I love tool porn.

Pete

Hi Balsa, I’ve had about 5 of those 653’s over the years, i don’t know if thats one of them but I’d take paul’s word on it.  I’m kind of a planer nut myself, I’m down to two Skil 7.5’s and one 653.

I grew up with one of those direct drive Stanleys(j4?) like at the top of the page because my dad’s a carpenter.  But there’s nothing like a Skil 7.5 amp as an all arounder, I can’t imagine using one of those little cheesy hitatchi’s when there seems to be Skils available right now at reasonable prices.

That Wen is a little POS, I’ll give it to you for your collection if you have an easy way to transport it.

Nice collection and pics guys.  Clean cutting too.  My brother-in-law left behind one of those spiral blade skils that I passed on to a contractor friend of his.  The contractor took out the blade/barrel set-up and took it too a .local shop to be sharpened .  When he went to pick it up they gave him a blade set up for a differant planer.  They're still looking around their shop for the part.  Dummies.

I'm with Pete - and dammit, now I'll be wandering the flea markets again, those and yard sales.

Surprising how well you can do at those - my younger brother got a Skil for ten bucks at one. That worked nicely.....

drat. Just when I had visions of lathes and a nice vertical mill dancing in my head.

doc...

Hi Gene, that’s a very generous offer and I just can’t let it pass. I’ll arrange something with my friend Jeffrey as he has already been stocking surf-related items for me in his parents’ garage in San Diego. I’ll PM you as soon as possible about it.

The Stanley was never intended to be used for surfboard shaping, I picked it up just for fun because it had that “antique” look to it… As previously said, once I got my first Skil100, I just fell in love with all these old aluminum planers and started collecting them. Shaping with them was not an issue, actually I don’t really care if they are in working order or not (although, as of now, all are), I’m in it for aesthetics mainly…

hey Balsa, have your buddy call me about a hand off. (805) 216-8232

Didn’t see the need to start a new thread for this.

Please, meet my Skil 100 number 2. I scored this one on our equivalent to your “Craig’s list” for a ridiculous 60 Euros (less than $75, I think?) and just received it this morning. What’s more, it runs on 220 V. I didn’t even think that it existed, except for the “european” version that I posted earlier (plastic handle); This one is an authentic Skil 100 type 3, but on 220 V.

score!

I’ve been looking for one of those for ages, but they are stupid money over here…

still trying to figure out the mods on my ryobi as it isn’t seeing much use with that ridiculous depth adjustment, lol

One thing bothers me though: I know that there are two american versions of the Skil 100: one is 4.5 Amp and the other 7.5 Amp, both 110 V of course. Now this one is 2.8 Amp for 220 V. If I follow the formula: “Amp X Volts = Watts”, the 4.5 Amp would be 495 Watts, the 7.5 would be 825 Watts and this one would be in the middle with 616 Watts? Am I wrong somewhere?

*Edit: it’s 5.5 Amp, not 4.5. So it’s 605 Watts, which is very close to 616.

Yes its a peice of trash I will take it from you for the price you paid bc I am so nice, I hopw someday I find a heavy planer Surfding Nudge Nudge!

Excellent!  Now you can teach Katherine to shape and have quality time in the shop together.

After years of dreaming of this planer, I finally bought this Skil 100 off E-Bay and it arrived yesterday. Thanks to Balsa, Mahady and PeteC for giving me advice on getting her tuned in. STOKED! I can't wait to mow some foam with her..http://deepcreekmudybech.wordpress.com/

I never post but I love my planers.  I had too much time on my hands a couple months ago and buffed out my skil (i couldn’t walk for 6 months, gotta pass the time).  I attatched another pic to show that it is now being put to good use.
