besides your low angle plane and power planer what other planers are necessary? spoke shave? small hobby plane? what do you use to grind your blades round?
if you do shortboards or guns (anything w/ significant nose rocker) I find a small plane to be invaluable for doing the deck/nose stringer. It can be a small spokeshave, a trim plane, or a small block plane – just has to be sharp and small…
I used 3 tools for my 10’6": clark power planer, small hand plane and small 6" surform. Then sand paper and sanding screens. I only listed the surform because HomeDepot catagorized it as a planer. b.t.w. I barely used the surform. basically just on the stringer at the very tip and tail.
Clark Foam, Mitch’s, and some woodworking supply stores sell a small radius-bottom hand plane for planing the concave portion of the stringer near the nose. They work quite well. Doug
I grind my blades round with a bench grinder then hone on a whet stone.
Also use a razor plane…
