my new unfinished website has been on air for 11 days… i have had 296 unique hits from china? its the third biggest amount under australia and USA 2nd. with the only public knowledge being made via my one thread on swaylocks regarding “who makes the best fishes” (www.diversesurf.com.au)
why is it so? is there that many chinese swaylurkers/backyarders/board builders?
Maybe they are looking for ideas for artwork for their mass produced stuff - maybe that page should be added to the “show us your artwork thread”, Dave. There is a great range of designs there, given me some ideas for my not so quite mass produced (but labour probably just as cheap) stuff.
they’ve been sending their scouts up here for years. what sucks is the people directing them are from major surf nations, Americans, Australians, Japanese, Europeans . . . Then they’ll unleash their army of underage workers in slave condition surfboard models selling for less than it takes to fill up a Honda Civic’s gas tank. They’ll have prestine Al Merrick and Rusty quality boards with Moonlight esque colors and Lost airbrushes.
Chinese are very good at copying stuff. Surfboards are no exception. They want the dollar more than Americans. You are watching a sleeping dragon awaken, and when it does, it will be a new world power. One leg holds the largest military force in the world. Another support is more socio-economic capital that rivals all the G8 nations put together, the head is composed of iron willed leaders and brilliant minds. The other leg is a people dedicated for centuries to one rule whether it be a dictator or an emperor. The tail will lash across the world, reigning fear and pushing other nations away like the morning sun chases the shadow of night away. The other two legs comprise the 1/3 of the world’s landmass and resources. The dragon will strike from its moonbases and mars colonies while the rest of the world skirmishes about politics and the sweet flavor of next starbucks coffee.
But the dragon cannot determine the fin placement. change music cue from rising cresendo strings to funny be bop disney channel cartoon theme
If you can, get the visitor IP addresses out of your traffic reports and go to: www.dnsstuff.com. Do a whois look up on the most common IP addresses. Most of your traffic will come individual users logging onto an ISP and using a dynamically assigned IP, but some will be for companies who have there own web gateways – so you find out a bit about them.
A bit of this traffic may be automatic. Your site would have been spidered by Google shortly after posting your new web address in Sways. It’s very likely that manufacturers in China subscribe to an automated service that uses Google to locate surfboard makers and then harvests their e-mail addresses. Manufacturers would then send you an automated email asking if you are interested in getting boards made in China. A whois lookup will probably turn up one or two IT service companies who are doing this.

As far as immediate impact on the way we live, I’m much more concerned by Google than the rising giant China. Google sounds like the next best thing to having a GPS locating unit crammed up my bunghole and electrodes attached to pleasure centers in my brain. But hey, it’s early yet…
Maybe the Chinese will figure out first class waveparks and artifical reefs, if for no other reason than to create more capacity for their upcoming products. Hint hint.
Spent 45 minutes (going into sunset) bodysurfing at Zuma yesterday. Surf was not much but when I timed it pretty close I could get those see-through greengold lip pitches before the heart of the waves sucked up sand like a cigi special effect. Kind of nice.
